Out to the Perris, Calif. track with the lightweights for practice and th en staying there for such a l ong time we actually loaded up by the light cI. flashlights! The big boys didn't get a dJance until way Into the afternoon, then ran out of light so had to switch on the lights and use the short course for the remai nder of the program . The 500 E>lperts had to contend with lights on the front half of the circuit and then almost complete darkness for the rest of the way In their last moto, plus a start lett Chuck Minert dangling because he thought the starter was going to back up his threat to put anyone back W ho jumped. Then a guy fell ot! playing in the gravel pit tlJJd had to be trucked out by ambulance with another wait until the IJack- up ambulance replaced him . In this case that man Is going fo have to pay his own freight to the hospital as Sun City has always taken racing r iders free of charge from Perris when they require full attention, the only ambulance service we've ever heard of that does this! Track owner Gerry Bur ton was plagued all day by phone calls from l ocal property owners (and the l ocal police) who were !lndlng riders riding where they shouldn't; on surrounding dirt roads and out in to the boondocks behind the track In spite of sig ns saying NO MOTORCYCLES BE YOND HERE . So, you super squir r els, som e of you had your numbers noted and turned in . Fltty-four 100 Novices showed up ( like wow, we're being Inva ded) , there was a total of some 290 rider s and 100 people through the gatel In all good faith the Jack Rabbits hosting the event thought th ey ' d be good guys and run everyone on the l ong cour se but that takes time and when things get to happening (and they did) you jus t can' t run a full day of racing at this time of the year wi thout runni ng Into probl em s, wi th everyone on the long cou rse . Terry Dor sch out with hi s l ow number seven Expert plate did I n the Open class, beating Ben Fakk eldy and Dewayne Jones. Young Jones was going like Jack:theBear on his A m e r I c a n Competition Frame special. By the low number plates carried by half the Open Amateur class we suspe ct that the Open Exper t class Is going to grow considerably larger very quickly as mos t of the Amateurs must be within ju st a few points of transferring. Our " favorite" eftort of the day has to go to the win ning hack of Bingham and Wade. The hacks were out In force. One went ot! the cliff at th e end of the straIght but In true hack fashion, dusted oU, shook I ts elf, sai d "ouch" a couple of times and got back Into action; and two teams had " kneel er s" out, which are a little hairy In the rough. Ed Wade was passenger on one and was 11terally dragging his posterior on the track around the rock turn! Keep that up Ed, and we have a feellng that Ken Maely Is going to get a request to r a " shoe" i n a shape he' S never made befor e!
