v • B1ll Burr had been doing well but his Honda gave out and so coming into check two it was Wood, Grieve, Jackson, Smith and Ron Lambert. Don Grieve came to grief as his Hodaka began to give out and Jack Johnson took over second place. Gary Whitehead moved up into fifth place by the end of the second lap but James Sharp grabbed It away in the third lap. By now Jack Johnson and Scott Smith were right on Phil Wood's tail and Roeseler had moved up to eighth on the stock sachs. On the last lap Wood's Yamaha slowed near check one and Johnson and Smith zipped around and pulled out a good l ead down the firebr eak . After ten minutes of anxious waiting a shout went up as the three machines appeared in the canyon below. They were so close thei r tires were almost touching as they fought their way up the ridge toward the finish . Over the last hill and acr oss the finish line it was Phi l Wood followed by Jack Johnson and Scott Smi th o Ligh tweights Fifteen minutes later the nag went up for the lightweights and Bob Riley took an early lead on his Greeves. Jerry Kopp held onto second as the pack raced down the firebreak and across the field into check two with Don Dixon in third followed by Don Watkins and Kenny Johnson on the 175 Bultaco. The sandwasn now had a good fast groove and the riders were banking oU the sides as they fiew. around the turns . Dixon and Watkins edged their Greeves past Jerry Kopp's Bultaco in the big sandwash and Frank Cochrane moved his CZ up to fifth place . - lightweight course and now he had moved up from tenth place and was after Bellach, They raced past check three and up the canyon where Bruns took the lead on the T-100. Over the top and past check one it was Bruns, Johnson, Smith, Mc Donald, Eric Moberg and Don Watkins. On the second lap McDonald moved up to take third i n the sandwash and got seco nd coming up the canyon. The positions r emained the same fo r one lap when Smith began to tire and Moberg, Watkins and Kenny Distler passed him coming up the canyon. Johnson's Triumph roared past McDonald as they approached the ridges. On lap four Bob Foote gave it al he had and got by Distler but Distler repassed him in the canyon and started to make hi s move as they entered the last lap and he pulled past Moberg and Watkins . Johnson was gaining on Bruns but there just wasn 't enough time to catch him and Br uns crossed the finish line with several seconds to spare . Bill Johnson was second followed by Norm McDonald, Kenny Distler, Eric Moberg and Don Watkins. A Sweepstakes r ace had been scheduled but most of the eligible riders were too tired to compete and when only three riders lined up at the start they decided among them sel ves t o call i t off. The Bushmas ter s tried to give the riders a diUerent kind of race and they succeeded this time with a very good course that evoked much praise from most of the contestants. Their was some dissension on allowing riders to enter small machines in the larger classes and it was decided that this would not be allowed in future events . Trophies will 0> ll> t>o 0: c, 00 ~ ~ . C\J t- ,...,. At c h e c k one it was Riley , Watkins, Dixon, McDonald and Johnson. The positions remained the same through the fourth lap and into the fifth lap as Watkinds was cutting down Riley's lead and Ken Johnson was moving up until he was r i ght behind McDonald coming out of the sandwash, UP the canyon toward the finish line Johnson drove his little Bultaco around McDonald's Husky. They raced over the last hill and Riley took the win followed by Watkins, Dixon, Johnson, McDonald and James Piette, who was first novice on his Kawasaki. Heavywei ghts The starter flapped his nag and the elephants thundered around check one and down the firebreak. Old desert ace Bill J 0 h n son held the lead as they dropped into the sandwash followed by Jim Bruns , Jim Bellach, Charl es Boatwright and John R. Smi tho Down the sandwash Smith rode his Victor into third place ahead of Bellach. Norm MC Donald had entered his Husky against the big bikes on what proved to be a L i ghtwei gilt winner Bob Ri ley ( Greeves) turned back lIIe troops In fine fashion, willi his fmnt wheel In the air most of the time. be awarded to winners at the next Bushmasters race. Kopp's Bultaco gave up in tile canyon and as the riders came up past check one it was Riley, Dixon, Watkins, Coch rane and Johnson. Down the firebreak Johnson led Don Ross past Cochrane. Down in the sandwash Ross' Husky got by Johnson but Norm McDonald came up fast and passed them both. The riders held this position for over a lap and then, late in the third lap, Ken Johnson r etook fifth place.
