The course dropped int o a wash at check two where Jack Johnson had the lead followed by Phil Wood, Earl Roeseler, Don Grieve and BUI Burr. A narrow twisty sandwash kept the r iders working in first an d second gears and finally led into a bi g cur vy sandwash that was good for third an d fourth. There were a few spills along this mile lon g section of the course as the Novices were learning about sand and rocks . Roe s ele r lost his spark plug and any chance for a win in this section. In many places here the tra.11 was wide enough for only one bike as it wound through the scrub trees, along a. wash and up a ridge toward check one. As they topped the hill approaching check one Phil Wood had a. commanding lead on second place Don Grieve, who was pulling away from l2-year-oldScott Smith. Jack Johnson and Ron Lambert were batillng for the chance to pass Smith.
