Long Beach, California. , THREE MILLION Story and Photos by Dale McKinnon The Lodi Motorcycle Club, always full of surprises, came up with another one Sunday. November 26. They have one of the "lowest" tracks in the country; it is situated down in a sort of a hollow. They make a flat track wi th a jump in it, a scrambles course out of it, etc. Well, this week they ran part of the course up and around one side of it, then dropped back down into the hollow again. One can get up a pretty good head of steam before having to slow down almost to a stop before making the hard left turn. Bob Roche in the 500 Amateur Main found apretty good way; he spilled as he made file turn, was separated from his bike and rolled down the drop-oU, the bike following. He wasn't the only one to take that way down either. Roche still managed to get fourth. There was a little mixup in the 650 Novice Main, as about half the riders tried to jump the gun. Most of them got back to the line, but there were two who decided to tour the course, so they had a restart without them. When the mistake was discovered they black-flagged -the-race and started all over again with all the riders. Dean Caster, Jim Nichols and Greg Rondy all made the first turn together with Greg trailing in third. He got past Jim just before the drop-oU and down the hill he passed Dean. Greg was really in a hurry and he went on to take an easy win. Jim had a little trouble hanging on to third as Bob Robertson wanted it in a bad way, but didn't quite have the horses to pull it off. The 500 Novice Main proved interesting in that the whole group got to the drop-off almost simultaneously; there was a lot of banging of elbows and handiebars and bikes but no spills or anything. Richard Jacobs, Wilber C. Smith and Bob Garretson all came oU together, so close in fact you could have covered them with a postage stamp. Chisolm slipped in there to make it a four-way go. Richard really started stretching it out but went a little wide Don RI cIIard Brown (7) Is ludl nc thl 650 Expert Main at this. point, but Bill Jamison (2) cot by him lor the win. Bob was Johnny-onthe-spot and took over the lead to take a well-deserved win. El1ll Jamison built up a good lead in the 650 Expert Main and left Terry sage and Rick Otto to battle for second, which they did peg-ta-peg for several laps. Donald Castro from way back in the pack made his charge through the pack for the lead but got stopped after passing Terry and had to settle for second. Bruce Maynard pulled a first in the 350 Novice Main in that he missed the first turn and _nt high up on the bank, like be was trying to straighten out the course or something. The bike stayed there and he rolled down with only his pride hurt. Another sp1ll in the 250 Expert Main saw Ph1llip Hinkle and Jay Carter get tangled up and go down. They were riding bar to bar for the most pa,rt and over the -jump Ph1llip moved over and sideswiped Jay. Phil did several endos and ended up bouncing oU the fence. Very spectaculat, and no one got hurt. stan Anderson grabbed a quick lead in the 250 Amateur Main with Frank Hall right on his tail. Frank went down and out at the drop-off. Carlo Lucia moved up to take his place and he tail-gated stan all the way around the track untll the last lap, then slipped by for a close win. But not before Stan took the lead back and lost it again at the finish line. They swapped first place several times on the last lap for an excellent finish. - Inthe -200 Novice-Main- they had a single line restart after four bikes went down and the race was stopped while spilled gasoline was burned oU the track. The first rider got into a high speed wobble and went down in the middle of the pack. One rider missed him but went down also, then another ran over him and also unloaded. The fourth man dumped it trying to miss the plle up, but though it looked bad, no one was hurt. This happened on the second or third lap, so a single line restart. Richard Wharton was in the lead both times and won the second time out. Tom Booth kept his winning string intact by a narrow win over Jerry Baugh. On the start they both almost climbed the bank going into the first turn but came out all right and went on to win the race. Sue Childress reversed an earlier defeat by Debbie Jackllne to take the girl's race. This gives Sue three wins out of four races, real 'good for a begin_ nero (Resuits on page 16) ... ~ <\I a.. ... <0 ~ .,; .... .. ~ ~ al l::l U) ~ :i!: fo:I -..J ~ W USED M/C PARTS WE PAY CASH FOR USED PARTS - ALL MAKES DISMANTLING '66 HONDA 450 '65 HONDA 5-90 '67 BRIDGESTONE 115 '64 YAMAHA YDS 2-250 '64 HONDA C-2l1O-90cc WE SHIP ANYWHERE.
