The winter indoor racing seasoo got
underway SaturdaY, Dec. 2 at Long Beacb
(Calif.) Arena. Some of the razzle-daZZle
was missing (no band to play the sc
figbt song as the racers came into the
arena) and there was no sanctioo of any
kind, but it turned out to be a good program and a lot of excitement was generated by the appearance of Evel Knlevel.
One of tbe showiest starters aroUDd,
Chuck Murray,· had charge of the flags
with Red Ludford the referee as the
125cc class appeared to start the program.
Gene Romero, back out again for the
first time since bis serious injury, took
the first heat on aHondaandKelthMashburn the second beat on his Lobito with
the fastest beat time. Tom Rockwood on
one of the new little 125cc Barleys took
the third heat with the third fastest time.
Rick Woods (Ducati) bad tile fastest
250cc heat with a win after a re-start
as some of the troops went dowD in the
first turn and Clutch Cargo was .-tile
to re-start, but Rick blew 'em all olf
proving again that there is no substitute
for experience. He, Gary calIdns, Keitb

trial nms and then jumPed clean as a
wbistle to the cheers 01 tile crowd.

really controlled, bung onto bis lead to
the finish. in spite of Randy Say's attempts to get him. Norm Elledge (Bultaco) and Gary CalIdns (Yamaha) madea
real race out of the third and fourth
place spots.
The 250 Main turned into the most
exciting of the evening. Rick Woods
grabbed off the lead with Lee Wehrman
rigbt on bis tail. Clyde Litcb, Ron J
