TUVIS PmOi : COIflNUED fl. P.l9 °1 ~t', ,. . . . 1 ' "'''~''.~.'''-''' Ca I Rayborn dazzled the crowd with spectacular slides on his Harley-Davidson. A broken chain sidelined him in one moto, but he won the ne.t in determined fashion. tllree laps and ~ slightly sliclc to say the least. The lOOcc Expert motos were classIcs. Jim McGuire and his very special 5-speed reed-valve Hodaica were upset for the first time in many a moon. Bill Silverthorne, stepping down from his usual 250 Husky ride, did Jolly Jim In. Silverthorne got by McGuire on the third lap of the first moto which served notice to the Hodaka crowd that poor ole' Jim had his work cut out this day, To make matters even worse, E. Barker pushed in for second on the last lap. The second moto was highway robbery with McGuire holding off Silverthornes' Yamaha till the last corner and having Bill go around him on the outSide, to win by inches. The last moto was anti-climatic with Bill holding an easy second on a slick track, McGuire way out front, but knowing that Silverthorne's second gave bim the day. The Novice 250cc Main was ultimately rained out, but it couldn't have been any better than tbe early elimination heats. Little Don Emde was tbe winner on bis dad's shiny new Suzuki wi th a comfortable (?) lead over D. Engstrand on the El Cajon Kawasaki. Emde won the last • San Dle.o aNa's youn..st rider pulled a third In his heat. Completing his second yo.r of raeIn., this talented lad is only 10 years old. (!) ~ i : Novice eveot here with the same rig bot Engstrand was not present. After much hullabaloo, they finally got together and little Don got first blood. The second Novice moto saw two Bultcos and a Montesa in a very hard fought heat with J. Leque, J. Sweeny, and J. Glass showing the way. Since the Main was rained out, the heat winners are posted in the final results. The 250cc Expert class, always hardfought at this track, was even more so and produced a winner with revenge on his mind. Johnny Apple, riding the same Suzuki that Emde rode, put it on the troops. John had victory in his grasp at an earlier meet only to crash and be relegated to a frustrating second. This ti me he was not to be denied and after the dust (I mean mud) had cleared he took it all. First moto saw Ring and his potent Benelli leading for two laps but Apple rapidly cut the lead and was followed to the line by Ring and F. Roach on a Bultaco. The second moto was a pulse stimulator with skillful Dick Mills and his Bultaco trying to save face for sunny Spain. Dick did a bang-up job til, you guessed it, the last turn of the last lap, at which time Apple upset his applecart with an outstanding drive to the flag. Apple, when asked about his Victory, merely sm iled and said, "How sweet it is." Due to shortage of entries, the 500cc Novices were run with the Open, results being the same as preceding events with J. Harmon (Norton) coming up for his third straight win. The first Novice moto was Harmon hands down. Off the line and gone. The second moto, however, presented some problems with J, Herrett on a 350cc Yamaha getting the jump on Jovial Jim and never relinquishing the lead to the flag. Ah, what a dirty trick. Jim now has three in a row and had best get ready to come up with some white paint for those number plates of his in the not too distant future. In the Expert 500-0pen Class Cal Rayborn rode with a capital" R" .In the first moto Cal took over after one lap and treated the crowd to some wide open, full lock slide cornering that had cameras clicking allover the place. Myron Carter (Triumph) tried but the class and experience of Cal was too mUCh, until Rayborn broke a rear chain and Carter went on for the heat win with Grant Do M NA LONG BEACH INDOOR 1st RICK WOODS -DUCATI R ACE S •, 2nd MICK MIKE BOAl -BUl . Carter, however, had the last laugh, as his easy second In the final moto was good enough for a win. This kid was sure happy. Being one of Petions proteges out of the Poway area, he rE>ally wanted this one. The day's events ter m inated with the Powder Puff division and a clean sweep for Carol Chiara, but not after a wee bit of a hassle wi th 13-year-old D. Reun on a similar Hodaka. Carol now has the ladies' #1 sewed up for the year and her old man, Mick, will probably be getting more attention now that the season is terminating. This race also saw Carol Gooding, last year's #1, competing and she pulled down enough points for a third. The deluge thai ended the race commenced at the start of the 250cc final and though washing out the last few events, it far from washed away the, enthusiasm of those present. Hats off to the Hi-Boots for a fine event enjoyed by one and all and to the financial assistance they gave to Mrs. Petton in an hour of need. Thanks also to all of the riders who gave up their trophies in a gesture of thoughtfulness that is so typical of this sport.
