It was surprising to see the 100 Novice ranks draw 42 riders. The liquid sunShine held off most of the night, however, only making the track slippery for the last few events. For the past couple of weeks the spectators have been able to enjoy the races from a large grandstand erected on the h1l1 overlooking the sweeper. They were put there for a special jeep race held at Elsinore on Saturday and Sunday. TELL THEM YOU SAW IT IN CYCLE NEWS It's Approved! USSI, Z90.1 (and Snell SCCA) The new Cosmo SmaIl Bike Super-Riders The 100 Novice always seems to be the most difficult to foretell as in this case a different racer won the first 5 heats, so it always looks like anybody's race up till trophy time. Not a stranger to first place on a Hodaka and wearing all green leathers and winning the very first race on this night, was D. Hopkins. He usually is trackside with his dad who does the tuning. Hopkins rode hard as usual and was able to win 4th place overall. D. Damron' also on a Hodaka took 'home first place honors for some very fast and controlled riding, as W. Blakeslee got second and J. Herrett took home third. Only five Experts in the 100 ranks signed up, but the racing was good as everyone used the extra elbow space to get some racing room. D. Aldana who has been zapping the troops in the short track ranks was on hand to do bilttle with R. Vanderpool and J. West for the glory as Vanderpool on his Yamaha went on to win this event and lead the Sweepstakes with D. Aldana just behind for two good laps until the large bores came on to sweep by them. An interesting and very pleasing sidenote is that a P. Dibble on a 50 Honda rode against the men for her first ride on a scrambles track. r must say-she wasn't the fastest Novice on the course, but she had a way of making the ride she took look very smooth. Clutch has just come back to Elsinore as he suffered a slight injury to his wrist In a fall road racing. Kato kept far enough in front to win the trophy and the' Sweepstakes. And a hard charger in big bike ranks was Don Finley who did well considering his motor trouble. All in all, the races were enjoyable as they usually are and the program finished up with the usual trophy presentation, which is the best time of all for some. Let's see you all at Elsinore next Saturday night! (Results on page 16) TOUR 01 EUROPE lb. lour will be in Mar·)un., 1968. With the purchase of 6"j~NORTON, A.J.S. Kanagae took home the 1st place trophy this night ahead of M. Lanphere. Kanagae rode well but has a new starting procedure that is interesting as the engine was held at a very high rpm until the flag was dropped; don't knock it, it works! Sporting a new beard, complete with the ever-present cigar and out for a winning ride on this evening was J. Wahl who didn't always do the gate job, but seemed to be able to move up conslstentiy. Wahl came to the races complete with pit crew.his wife, who does a great job in that department. Freddie Edwards zapped the guys very well on a 250 Bultaco that runs, and Fred looks like he will continue to be a big threat in this class wherever he rides.
