A turnout of well over 100 riders and a record amount of SIIills topped tbe action at tbe first indoor cycle races held last Sunday ni gbt, November 26 in Fresno. A IOOd turnout of botb Northem and Southern California riders got tbe ball lOlling at !be Convention Center for tbe first of a series or indoor events that will nan agaia on December IOtb and 17tb. Ron Kruseman and his Triumph turned in the fastest 250cc heat race win hut the Honda of Paul Bostrom's came uP as the 250cc trophy dash winner when the four fastest beat race winners met for the first time. Then It was Montesa's turn and the Spanish brand flnished one-two with veteran in d 0 0 r rider Eddie Mulder squea1dng out the win in the 15-lap final by a few inches over fellow Montesa rider Phil Cancilla. '!be well-balanced program whichfeatured one class for 250cc machines and another class for 125cc bikes saw the four fastest beat winners in the 250cc class on tour different brands of equipment. The same was true in the ultraligbtwelgbt l25cc class - four di!ferent brands. Russ Robinson posted the fastest eigbt lap beat ra.ce time in the 125cc class on his Suzuki and then backed It up with the dasb win. Robinson, bowever, got off in the final and bad to settle tor 10th place in the feature. l25cc Main Event bonors went to Mike Yarn and his Hodaka. Yarn, the winner of two straigbt 250cc maln events at San Jose, found the going rougber in the 15 inch final and was dumped oft his machine. Mike remounted to finish In lOth. Veterans DIck Dorresteyn, MertLawwill, Clyde Lltcb and Sid Carlson were just a tew who bad the bard way to go. All but Lawwill failed to make the 250cc Main Event. Lawwill took two headers during the evening and the action became so bot in one heat race that the event was re-started no less than four times before the riders could complete two laps. Butch Corder was also back in action hut came uP with mechanical troubles in practice and did not compete in the actual races. The nation's former high point short track racer, Rlcb Faria, did not quallly for the 250cc Main Event. As usual, it was a big nlgbt for uPsets with Novice and Amateur riders winning many races and positions over the more experienced experts. Par for the course in indoor racing. Indoor racing now continues in Fresno on most Sunday nigbts until early Marcb. '!be indoor scbedule this weekend finds the riders In San Jose on Friday nigbt and the opening of Long Beach on saturday nigbt. '!be next Fresno date is Dec. lOth.
