Ma~ it's so, that the MatchIess rider was tired because of just finishing a race, but the point you omitted was that the Greaves rider also had good reason to be tired, for he had just ridden three different races the day before. (You see, you're a partial writer, and I'mapartial reader, the only dllterence being, you get something out of it, and I do not.) Let's try to be ethical and give credit where credit Is due. The stories ypu write should be In the best Interest of the riders and the readers. They also should be Impartial, accurate and complete. No one can squawk If they are presented In this manner, but, when the stories Indicate partiality and Inaccuracy, you'd better believe you'll be hearing many a squawk. Motorcycling Is becoming political enough without the writers of the sport joining in. TIilS IS WHERE IT'S AT ..... MRS. GREEVES RIDER Compton, Calif. CHALLENGE TO EUROPEAN RIDERS We, the IUldersigned issue a cballenge to the Husqvarna and C-Z teams tomeet us on a local TT scrambles track. We have raced against them on their type of tracks, now we want to go against them on our type of track and on our type of scrambles machines. . Sincerely yours, EDDIE MULDER DUSTY COPPAGE SKIP VAN LEEUWEN Los Angeles, Calif. ("Dear 'Mrs. Greeves Rider': AN OPEN LETIER TO MAUREEN LEE Your story covering the Hopetown Grand-Prix was very Informative and profitable, for some peoPle, but why tile partiality to the "big boys" and our "flnest American riders," who didn't seem to make the grade? What about the rider (Greeves), whom you implicate, won only because a certain '1 rider was tired out? This rider rode the 500 Am-Ex sporting event on a 360 Greeves which also happened to be the only Greeves that took a 1st place In this Sorry you were so unhappy about the Hopetown story and I wish you had signed your name so that If we ever meet we could discuss the coverage of this race properly as you obviously are unfamiliar with journalism. Firstly, this was the first race where we had the chance to see the Husky and C-Z teams In action against our American riders and naturally the majority of our reading public want to know what happened and are not interested in what happened In instances of individual riders unless they have a personal connection with same. I endeavoured to bring a picture of the whole weekend to mind, not individual riders; the problem of a race with over 700 riders (who wouldall like their names in the paper too!) makes that impossible and I singled out men who were mentioned with impartiality. As to hearing squawks, It might Interest you to know that I too hear squawks every so often regarding my partiality to one brand or another. However, I can walk UP to Nick Nlcholson(Greeves) Kim Kimball (Montesa) and Doug Yerkes (Bultao) et al; and speak with them as equal friends and they in turn all act the same with no "Sweet talk" or any other form of bribery intended or Implied or getting mentions in print. Once in a while riders will say I've been "bought out" by another brand, but not the distributors, and 1 might add ma'3m, these charges always come from an Interested party such as yourself not face to face from tile RIDERS. The BIG BOYS In the business always face you head on when they have a complaint and most of them are big enough to know that we all can make a mistake; we can' t please everybody every week and that it they didn't get their name In print this week It'll get in next. As to I!'otorcycling being political that it Is, and as a journalist It Is my duty to report on political actions wben they occur. This has done some good, believe it or not. Once again, I'm sorry that your husband, boyfriend or whoever your favorite rider was didn't make the story but that's the way it Is. Thank you however for your letter. You did at least attempt to do something about it HEAD ALERT A proposal requIring all motorcyclists in San Francisco to wear protective helmets was recently referred to the Fire, safety, and Police Committee by Mr. p. Tamaras, President of the Board of Supervisors. As reported In the San Francisco Chronicle, November 14, 1967, page 4, column 4, Mr. Tamaras attributed the majority of deaths In motorcycle accidents to the absence of a protective helmet. His proposal requIres operators and passengers of any power-driven, two or three-wheeled vehIcle to wear protective helmets at all times; this applies to transients guests of the city as well as taxpayers. It Is essential to the protection of the civil rights of the motorcyclist to abort this action before it Is allowed to set a precedent for the remainder of the slate. Whlle, In theory, this action is seeking to protect the lives of motorcyclists, it removes the individual's right to make his own decision on this matter. Any reference material or statistics you might have avaIlable would be appreciated. The hearing on this bill has not as yet be set; It will most likely be held the first week of December.
