Endaro. story and Pholos by Jolin Shedd Nearly 300 rlaers coaxed their machines over the Burro trails of early prospectors as they strove to win the Foothlll Hawks' annual Jackass Enduro. ThIs year, riders were greeted with much better weather. In • 66, the cold wind did its best to make everyone as miserable as possJble. On top of maJdng everyone uncomfortable, It blew away every course marker, making a bad situation worse. This year, bowever, riders were blessed with a beautiful day. There was little wind, and a cool morning turned Into an ideal sunny day. The start and flnisb was at Red Mountain, California. The first loop was similar to last year's, and part of it was the same course, but riders were traveling In a different direction. At 8:01 a.m., the first four riders were on their way. starting In a southerly direction, they paralleled Hwy. 395 for a ways and then began making a loop to the east as they encompassed Red Mountain and Dune Mountain. 1be first loop bad Its share of cobby stuff with· some nice big rocks to lean against In case you sbould decide to park your scooter In a burry. Sbortly alter 10 a.m., riders began coming In with half of the 100 mile ride beblnd them. After a 19 minute stop, they were off again. The second loop started on the California City Mojave Road, west of 395. The course turned right toward Randsbog, then left over Government Peak and followed the mountain ridges toward California City and back along part of this year's Greenhorn course.
