Bob Belt, also on a Greeves, took the 250cc win. and Dave Ekins built up a big lead to take the win in the 100cc class on a Zundapp. The race was held in the Red Rock Canyon area of Southern California and it was a "wild turkey· run with two forty-five 0 _ _ 11 00 a H.sQ. mile loops in rough territory. The only man not to get off the line was current point leader J.N. Roberts, who had to change a plug and start fi ve minutes late. At the smoke bomb the leader was Steve Hurd on a Matchless single, just flat-out making it. He increased his lead by the time he hit the second check, and when he looked back, the only other rider he could see was Dick Dean, on the Triumph tuned by his dad at the Lamoreaux Shop. As bad luck would have it, Hurd got a flat tire and had to toss in the towel. Ronnie Nelson, recently returning to the desert on a Montesa and looking good, also fell out with a flat tire. Gary Conrad, meanwhile, had worked his way up to pass Dean in the hilly section of the course, and came into the pits with a forty-second lead over him. John Steen, on a Metisse, was the third man into the pits. The riders made the second loop a little faster than the first, finishing at the bottom of a sandy hill. The first man to roar down the hill was Gary Conrad, and forty seconds behind him was Dick Dean, claiming second spot. Lon Peterson, on a TriumphMetisse, pulled in third, and fourth-place honors went to Bob Belt, who took first 250 on his Greeves. J" Coals ....tered III. SolIIM.. C. Nu..ber 551 bul no lIIrb)'.
