'Ibis way the entire day is spent on fleld meet events, providIDg time for the mu:tmum number of riders to compete tully. Sunday morntng, october 1, was damp and overcast. Riders found mist and drops of water forming on thelr windshields as they rode to the field. But the air was warm, the sky cleared by noon, and bright sunsblDe was enjoyed the rest of the day. Planks, Barrels & Potatoes 1be first event was a Ride-the-Plank contest. 1be surface of the field consisted of damp sand, and riders really had a problem keeping their sand-covered wheels on the 2 X 4' plank. Next event was a Barrel- Roll contest, with riders trying to push barr~ls between two white lines to the tinish line with thelr front wbeels. Sounds simple, but just try it sometime. 1be following event was the Clothespin Contest. Riders rode their macblnes as slowly as poSSible along a clothesllne while their passengers tried to attach as many pins as possible to line as they went by. TIle average contestants lett 2 or 3 pins on tile line, while the more sJdll!ul teams made scores of 6 or 7 clothespins. Zig-Zag Time FOR THE NAME OF YOUR NEAREST OEALER s.. C.I: McCulloch _ . Inc. Contestants were timed as tlley zig-zagged between tramc cones. As the hours went by, many riders fotmd they were out of the running and lett for home, leaving a small number of die-hards wtIo fougbt to the bitter end for the trophies. The next to last event was a variation of the weente-bite contest. Instead of a mustard-d1Dked weente suspended on a strlDg, riders tried to clamp thelr cItoppers on a gooey wbtpped-eream marshmallow. If the rider could balance his mlECbine at a standstW for a moment under the marshmallow, the passenger had a chance to billtbe marshmallow off the string, but most contestants ended uP with only a face tun of wbipped cream. TIle last games were played with potatoes. Flrst, riders tried to throw potatoes in a bucket as they rode by. 1b1s was made harder by placing the bucket on tile throttle side of the macblnes so tbat lbe rtders had to throw with tbeir lett hands. Tben a similar event followed; this time the passengers _re tile marksmen. TIle tlnal event was a scramble for potatoes hiddelt .In a p1Je 01 straw .1Uders with their passengers rode s10'W1Y in a circle. At a given signal, the passengers jumped off and ran tor tile straw pUe to ftnd a potato. Jim Shaw and Rose Konley tied fortlle sweepstakes Trophy, so tlley competed in a spear-tbrowlng contest. JIm Shaw was the winner, giving him a total of three trophtes to take home. Fred Aber won the Hard Luck Tropb:y by falling off during one 01 the contests and cracklng a rib. TIle Playboys really know how to present a fleld meet, always coming uP with new vartattons to old games, and it's a safe bet tbat this year's 148 entries wlll be back again next year. The Playboys wlll be presenting a short fteld meet at Death Valley again this year, and don't miss the 4th Annual Playboys Field Meet next year. YOU'll have aball.
