place and first Amateur boDors. Roberts Heeds Hurd Larry Berequl st, 3rd over aII At the tlnish line, Roberts took the win with a" two-minute lead, Hurd second, Bergquist th1rd, and Warren Siegfried took the Amateur prize and sixth overall, for a good day's ride. Lon Peterson, #6 00 a Rickman Metisse, worked his way up to eighth position and first Open Expert and Bob Belt was right behind him to take 250 Expert on the Greeves. The tlrst Novice In wascraigShephard, #354, taldng 17th overall, and the tlrst 250 Novice was Jim Fishback, #556x, riding his heart out and finishing a respectable 23rd overall. Fishback, on a Husky, was without a doubt one of the tiredest riders of the day, getting a real good start, and making up his mind to hold onto his advantage. Not bad for a rider of six months' experience. The Spoke Benders did an excellent job of liming the course, and most of the riders In the pits agreed that It was a good day of racing. To quote one rider, "Man, that was a rough course," and "Man, there was a lot of dust," and ..... where Is the next run going to be?" on a BSA. TRAIL BIKES IIll11lber 96, Joey Sanders pts his picture In the paper. The trail bikes had a separate twelvemile course, 00 which they were to go four laps. There was one banner start for both starting lines, with the course going In opposite directions, aboutonehundred yards apart. At the drop of the banner the 125 riders took off in the sl1gbt1y QPIIW and saDd,y booIIdock territory, wbere the numerous trails tunneled into a narrow slDgle trail that dropped into a sandwash. At this point, It was Tom Ruddy, #36 on a Van Tech, Frank Morgan #1 on a Hodaka, r-. Jim Jackiett #483, an Amateur on a ~ Hodaka, Rick Stumps #57, another Ama- .... teur on a Hodaka, and Dick Wright #14, II) on a borrowed Moto Beta, flghtlng It out Q; with Jack FroeliCh,#252 00 a Hodaka. Everyone blasted through thesandwash, <.> over a few rock steps, and up arock bill 0 without changing too many places, then the course hit the open trails and It was again every man for himseU. Ruddy and Morgan dueled hack and forth all the way around and Into the pits, but coming out of the pits, Ruddy again took the lead, with Morgan close behind. This lasted for three laps until Ruddy dropped a clutch, and Morgan pulled In a lap later for the win. Jim Jackiet came In second, with Jack Froelich th1rd, and Rick Slumps was the first Amateur In, taking fifth overall. First Novice was Ray Bandf1eld, #144 on a Mota Beta, running right up there In sixth overall, and another Novice doing very well was Ron Ashby #232 on a Hodaka, having a good ride, and placing seventh overall. The trail bike rldersappreciated having a separate course, because they dido' t have to eat the dust of the slower big bikes that usually start fifteen minutes earlier on the same course. The separate course Is also safer for the Novice. g (Results on page 20) YAMAHA 1-2-3 AT CARLSBAD! 5eptember 24, 19&1 Jill Flsllbac:ll250 1I0vlce winner, looks tired,.
