PAXTON TAKES THE HIGH ROAD Photos by Harry Lawrie, story by Dick Wright At lop, a d.sert I.all blk. rlder finds an opportunity to do a 11111. '111nlo Abov" Jack Mo.pn I.d, losl oul to Bob Paxton, h... closing th. pp. Trail Bike Bonanza Hare Scrambles at Holiday A desertful of. trail bike enthusiasts were at Frank ",Wheelie" Wheeler's latest Dunday fun ride. It was really a nice variety course of 15 miles around, with up and down hill sides, and beautiful sandwasbes, just good typical Holiday, California territory. At the drop of the banner it was (1) Jack Morgan on a Hodaka leading to the smoke bomb with Bob Paxton (13) on a Honda right behind him, Charles Hockie on a Zundapp was also in this fast moving group. Dave Ekins (61) on a Zundapp fouled a plug at the starting line and started 15 seconds after everybody was off the line. Halfway around the first loop both Morgan -and Paxton jumped into a sandwash at tbe same time and in the bar to bar thrusting, both riders killed their engines. Paxton was able to get his engine fired up first, and took off down the sandwash With Morgan hot on his trail. Botb riders came in the gas check wbeel to wheel but it was Morgan who was able to get the fast check and take off in the lead. This wheel to wheel duel continued all through the second loop, but on the third and last loop', fjve miles from the finisb both racers came up on a slower rider at the same time: Paxton took tbe high side through the bushes and Morgan took the other side and did a few hand stands in a couple of ditches which gave Paxton the advantage he needed, and he turned on his Ridgecrest Motors tuned Honda and came in for a very well deserved win. Morgan slid in for second spot, Charles Hockje pulled in third and a very determined Dave Ekins who had worked his way up from dead last took a very hard earned fourth spot. Steve Holiday (236) on a Hodaka came in fifth and took first novice. Wheelie Wheeler laid out a deligbtful course and because of the enthusiastic respknse of the riders who sbowed up last Sunday, tbe future may bring anotber "Wheelie go."
