Spills were frequent botb at the afternoon beat races held under a canopy of clouds aDd in the evening. UpS aDd Do.as Probably the most sensational spill came in the afternooD heat race in the 200cc class when Dickie Russell of Grants Pass flipped his bilte on the Jump and lost his seating, sliding about 20 feet on bis stomach before he bounced UP. remounted his bike and finished the race. Biggest pileup of the day came during the 200 - A - Main when practically the entire starting field tried to make the first turn at the same time. Even after restarting. tbe turns were too crowded and a few riders fell by the wayside just before reachingthe iump Mlfway through the lap. Ore.. and Fredolf Johnson Jr. of Everett, Wash.. scrapped through 12 laps for the fIrst place spot with Mederos winning but forfeiting to tbe second-lDce J obnson so Meder-, os could move np to the -B- Main. which be also won and forfeited for a cban ce in tbe • A-Main. in whicb be failed to place. Riders from Oregon, California, and Washington were out for a weekend of racing in the Northwest and trophies went back to each State. Oref(on riders. however, got most of the gold from Sunny Valley Speedway by winning 24 trophies, California running second with 18. The Washington sportsmen. all 6 of them, made a real good showing and they took home 4 trophies. Racing was close and exciting in most of the classes. The 100 .. A" Main saw an Oakland Calif. rider, Harry Dring. mounted on a Moto-Beta Bob Snooks of SUIlll.Y Valley, Ore. did some tall Kawasaki riding to get in tbe -.A - lIBin in the 200 class. Bob fell down in his heat race and was placed in the -C- Main. He came out and won the -C- main. forfeited his trophy and advanced to tbe - B- main. again be took the number one spot, and again he forfeited and advanced. Tbe -./l- main came out and saw Bob battling it out witb Dennis Krois of Grants Pass. Ore., tbey crossed the line with Dennis getting bis Bultaco there first. leaving Bob in second piace. The 250 -./l- main saw a Bultaco rider Dwayne Francisco of Walnut Creek, Calif. take the lead and hold it for several laps only to fall down leaving M 0 n t e s a mounted Mike Thompson of Eureka, Calif. way out in front. The Bergquist brotbers of Crescent City, Calif. came up from back in the pack to battle it out for second and third place, with Rick ' getting his Bultaco to the line ahead of Jerry's Honda. D l' ar 109 B ags A B rass Monty Darling of Corona, Calif. jumped in the lead on his Honda in the 500 -A" main with Deverous Franks of Crescent City, Calif. right behind him. Deverous. riding a BSA developed in the 100cc -A- Main between Gene SChneider of GJaIlts Pass and Gary Kapus of. VllDCouver, Wash. SChneider toot secood and Kapus third. Grants Pass. some of the trophies were five feet high. Seasoa 'I'rop'ies Other season winners were Bob Harrison of Crescent City who took in the 200cc class witb a total of 1.00 points while Wes Word of Grants Pass won the trq,by for the 250Cc division and Bruce Cox of Eureka, Calif., topped the 650 class witb eacb counting a total of 80 points for tbe season. They finished just like they started witb Monty in first spot and Deverous in second. In tbe 650 class VanSbippy riding one of Fred Ford's Triumphs went into the first comer first and came out in t/le lead and beld it for 3 laps with Wes Word on a BSA from Grants Pass right hehind him. Word got around Van in the 4th lap aDd away he went to cross tbe finish line first witb Van of Sherridan. Oregon in second place. Tbe Powder Puff race saw Karen Word of Grants Pass riding a Bultaco take the lead and stretch it out all the way. Casualty Report There were a couple of unfortunate accidents Sunday. First Ted Robinson of Crescent City, Calif. went down in practice and broke his ankle. This will put Ted out of commission for the rest of tbe season (we sure are sorry. Ted). Then during the 100 -B- main, a rider went down in the corner by the pit area. another rider tried to miss him and lost control of his machine and went into the pits hitting Donnie Thumler. of Central Point. Ore. The family is happy to re port tha t there is no se rious injury. just bruises. Ray Copeland Speedway track manager has asked to say thank you to all of you riders for making such a good show at Sunny Valley.
