: ClO Q" story and Photos by Dale McJi'innon There were thrills and spills aplenty at Lincoln, Calif., on August 20. as the Sierra Cycle Club of Auburn bosted anotber fine scrambles. Huff aDd Puff • Ray Huff bad a little trouble in tbe250Expert Heat as Paul Johnson grabbed an early lead. That left Huff to battle George Carter and Carl Leihr. He finally got by Leihr then Carter moved up and tbey got tangled up and botb went down. Huff got back up, tben in tbe firs t t urn be missed it and went over tbe bank, so be was really having his problems. In tbe Main, Johnson took a quick lead and Liehr and Hufl were involved in a peg to peg battle down to tbe wire. Jobnson sent wide and Liebr and Huff got by; they were neck and neck with Huff baving a slight advantage. At the wire it was almost a photo finish but Liehr got It by tile narrowest 01 lJI8lgins. They both rode a beautifui race all the way (Liehr was on a Husky, incidentally). Tom Christensen was hard pressed to keep the lead in tbe 100 Novice Main. He relieved Marty Lewis of it, then lost it to Frank Fuson. Frank led for a while. then Tom got it back. Ron Long came up to do battle and Tom went down, leaving the victory to Fuson. Bill Sargenti had anotber good day at Lincoln. even though Joe Henry had the better of it at first. Joe got off the line first in the lOOcc Amateur/Expert Main and Bill was way back. SOon Sargenti started moving up and in a lap or two he took over the lead, romping in for an easy win. Lots or Passiag Ray Vatne was ofl to a quick lead in the 250 Novice Main. and Harold Carlile fell trying to get it away from him. Don McNabb had bis hands fuil trying to keep Rod Varley back. It took him a lap or so to puil it off but he did ••• right down the front straightaway. He was too far back to give Vatne any trouble, so had to settle for second. In the 250 Amateur. Haustein and Anderson got off the line together. but by tbe end of the first lap it was Miles Anderson in the lead. Another lap and Haustein lost anotber notch to Tom Bootb. wbo came elbowing bis way uP. While trying to catch Anderson. Bootb went down, and tben Haustein conked out. Eric JorgenseD finally moved up to ride peg to peg witb Anderson but he bad to bow to him at the finish. and Anderson won his lirst Main Event of the season. Ups and DOWDS It was a mad go in the 650 Amateur/Expert Main as all six riders were in tbere for the lead. Paul Knudsen got tangled up witb someone and fell and Wayne Chase ran over him on his H-D and went down. Really thought Paul had had it when that Harley went over him. but he came out of it okay. Art Ri net ti pulled a boo-boo and Cranke moved into second. Huff came up and almost got them both but fell back. The next lap Cranke got around Chase for the lead then Huff also got by him for second. Cranke really poured it on then to breeze over for the win. ,Altbough the turnout was a little less than usual. the races were excellent. (Re uJt8 on pace 20-21) (J71l) III . . . . "- SIll.
