Story and Photos by Vic Ebbutt
Another evening of exciting motorcycle racing at Graham Speedway.
near Puyallup. Washington. was climaxed by the success of Evel
Knievel. America's most famous
motorcycle stuntman. as he cleared
16 automobiles by a wide margin.
Previous to this Friday night's
jump. he had crashed onto the top
of the 15th car only three weeks before at this same track and suffered
two cracked ribs and a broken finger.
Two Heroes
Evel Knlevel hurdles 16 autos at Graham Speedway. lbe same track where
• he crashed attempUnc the feat a few wHks aco.
If it is possible to have two
heroes in one story, the other must
be Emil Ahola. National Number 80
of Tacoma. He was winner of the
Trophy Dash. his heat. and the Expert Main. Staving off the efforts of
National Number 69. Sonny Burres
of Portland. Number 99T Larry Garbe
of Vancouver, and Number 16 Don
McLeod, also of Tacoma, he romped
home in the Expert Main with a ride
that had to be seen to be believed.
Itwas absolutely flawless as Burres
and Garbe agreed after the event.
With men such as these crawling up
your tailpipe. you only make one
mistake. Ahola made none.
Graham Speedway. ten miles
south of Puyallup, continues every
Friday night to have SRO crowds.
The affairs are run with great precision, the surface is well cared for.
and the humburgers are great. It is
things such as this that lure spectators from 100 miles in every direction. week after week. and riders
from British Columbia. Eastern
Washington and Oregon.
