This time Nixon started things off witb a bang, setting fast time of 16.06 seconds. Jim Odom was tbe fastest Amateur at 16.59. Expert heat race Winners were Nixon, Fred Nix, Neil Keen and Chris Draayer. In the first semi it was Draayer over Nix, with Lawwill in fourth. Dick Mann, winner of two Nationals tbis year, had engine trouble all night and ran behind Red McKeen, who grabbed last transfer spot to the final. George Roeder also had trouble and by the time be got running tbe field was gone. Darrel Dovel lost a chain and did not make the Main. Nixon went all the way to win the second semi over Bart Markel, Neil Keen and Jobn Tibben. Former winner Roger Reiman fai led to finisb in tbe top six to make the final. It was an all Harley-Davidson twelve-rider feature except for the two Bultacos ridden by Keen and McKeen and tbe Triumph by winner Nixon. The Bultacos were never a threat. bowever; Keen finished 5tb and McKeen was far back in 9tb. 'lluee • ay Go Tbree riders - Nix, Nixon and Draayer - fought it out for bonors in t/le 25-lap final. At tbe start Nixon, wbo held tbe pole position, got cut off in tbe first turn, and after one lap it was Draayer, Nix and Nixon. Draayer, tbe rider who led for 17 laps in 1966, started to stretcb out his lead. It took Nixon until lap 13 to get by Nix, and the top three were running a full straightaway ,ri.
