DRUYER GUYELY lURED SEDALIA. MO. Sept. 2:jtb: Cycle races at the Missouri State Fair on the one·mile track proved to be the biggest mistake of the year as far as the riders were concerned. The Friday afternoon event, which preceded the Sunday night half-mile race, was run on a dry, dusty track that was far from fit to hold a major event. In the final for the Expert riders, Bart Markel was leadi ng the race wben his engine seized. Markel immediately raised his hand to signal that he was out of the J'8.ce ar;ld started to move off the pole and out of the way of the other riders. Chris Draa.yer chose to try and pass Markel on the outside rather than the inside and hit the fence • f~ 7"4- 7""""#4..a. U72li s.u ICI .. lies! LM ,..,.... SR WlOI T "Ir. TV! Draayer's machin flew into the air. pitcbing the Utah ace off the machine and into the fence. The bike new through the air and hit Markel knocking Bart down. We regret to ad vise tbat Chris Draayer suffered two broken legs and his left arm had to be amputated. Markel announced immediately after the race tbat he was retiring from motorcycle racing and left S~alia. Tbere were also many other injuries during the meeting. An unofficial report has it tbat California's Pat Gosch suffered a !>roken arm. (Cycle News will have the address in next week's issue for cards and letters to be sent to Chris who is hospitalized in sedalia.)
