TIGHT ASCOT POINT RACE LEADS THE WAY LACHER II.,.s ChUCk Way back in late May Mel Lacher scored a most impressive half-mile win at Ascot. Last Friday night he did the same for the second time this year. The early lap charger from San Diego took the lead from the start this time and held it all the way, to increase his point lead over Dan Haaby, who pulled only a fourth place this time. !t was a comeback of sorts for Lacher who ran last iIf the Trophy Dash a few minutes prior to the Main Event. S cram hi e F or,. econ d S The chase of .tbe mght was for second place Wlth Dash WInner Cbuck Jones coming from behind to catch and pass Jim Nicholson. Then Nicholson would re-pass for second alii so it went right down to tbe fiml turn witb Jones on tbe inside and Nicholson coming off tbe crashwall to bold secolli by inches. The fact that Nicbo~on grabbed Jones' leg and gave It a rearward shove may have made the difference. (!) Lacher also went down to defeat in tbe beat race and was turned back by Sammy Tanner who ,scored his 356tb balf-mile win. Later, in the final, the Flea could do no better than a dista~t fifth place finish. Dave had not won a Main event since June 16th but it was all Smi th this time as he grabbed tbe lead away from Joe Hamilton on the fourth lap and ran awa,y to another win and 100 IOOre big Ascot points.
