slowed considerably. It did not
slow enough to cost Skip his first
big wi n - but it was typical Van
Leeuwen luck.
Coppage moved up to take second, Dave Palmer came all the way
back through the pack for a close
third, and Simmons was back up and
running in time to take fourth. Mert
Lawwill ran a solid and consistent
fifth place to pace the national
point leaders.
A lucky break for Triumph and
two near misses for Norton best

The Amateur race was an eyepopper as well. Larry Wilburn was
by far the fastest Amateur in time
trials and won his heat race with
the best four lap time.
Jimmy Odom, looking for his 4th
straight Amateur National win, won
his heat but crossed the line with a
dead engine and much valve trouble.
Jan Crawford took the third and
final heat race.
It was an early runaway in the
15 lap Final for Wilburn but adorn
came from way back to catch and
pass on lap thirteen. Tlien the two
Triumph yellow plate aces both ran
into engine problems and found Enfield-mounted Roger Goldthwaite
right on their rear wheels.
The three riders rode the last
five laps like a Trophy Dash with
the first three place changing at
least three times every lap. adorn
managed to hold on to his lead and
Goldthwaite moved up to take second away from Wilburn. Crawford
finished fourth, with Oregon's Mark
Williams turning in a fine ride in
his first visit to California by finishing fifth.
