The event lasted four hours and 30 minutes, with pit stops cutting the average speed to a little over 55 miles per hour. Forty-seven machines, each with a two-man riding team, lined up for the Le Mans start at 1:30 p.m. A slight wind kept the temperatures down as the flag fell and the leatherclad riders spriIlted across the as-phalt to their waiting machines. Through turn two the two riders blasted and when they emerged from turn three 11 was G.rant in the lead. Immediately bebind Grant·s Yamaha was Burchards, pUshing his Honda bard. In fourth place. Rich Perkinson gunned his Triumph Bonneville while steve McLaughlin on another Triumph was fifth. By laP four Grant was already beginning to laP the tallenders, but McLaughlin was starting to catch Grant. The green-clad rider got closer on lap five and in the clear on lap seven, just before Grant's Yamaha suddenly seized, ending his racing for the afternoon. CHild .......
