n HOT TIME IN. OLD 'CALICO ~ "" ~ ~ oJ ~ tJ by VirciDia CopelaDd by Joe Timmons Despite blistering 115 degree heat at El Mirage. the ill-JINX annual ·Calico 50· was held with all the magnificence and excitement of a professional race. The one and ~ mile track was tightly wound through sagebrush and sported a challenging jump midway through each lap. There was an unusually large attendance of onlookers cheering on fa vorites •.A few cyclists decided to watch also in lieu of the heat. The race began with a Le Mans start. ,As the race progressed Fred Mendez of the ill-JINX, unable to finish the race, elected to aid the rest of the field in their pursuit of the finish line. He began providing water to those racers who wanted it. Even riders who declined to take time to stop were happily doused. It was probable that very few would have finished the race otherwise. After almost two and one-half hours of hard. hot. and hectic riding the judges decided that the field positions were unchanging and mercifully halted the race after about 43 miles, 7 short of the intended distance. The winner and places were declared by the present field positions. James Harmon. a newcomer to the ·Calico· races took first place on his Yamaha 100cc single. with Frank Vallefuoco of ill-JINX second on his Yamaha 80cc. Frank was first in the 0-80cc class and Jim was first in the 81-125cc class. C.L. Mackie. the winner of this year's ·Calico 100·, placed third overall and second in the 81-125cc class on his stock Honda 590. EI Mirage Dry Lake Bed is also the scene for TT SCrambles on July 23, as announced elsewhere in CYCLE NEWS. (a-tts 011 pace 16) 15 ... Rex Pittullo of Myrtle Point. Oregon. on a Bridge stone , and Gene Schneider of Grants Pass on a Bultaco gave him a good run for his money but couldn't quite get the best of him. The 200cc class came to the line and it was Bob Harrison from Crescent City, California, mounted on a Montesa, all the way. The 2 50cc class had no real close competition but the spectators got a real thrill watching Ralph Woldman of Fairfield, California ride. Ralph was home on leave from the service and that boy can flat ride. It·s been a long time since Grants Pass has seen a boy ride as pretty as he did. Fritz Espy of Grants Pass. on a Honda, had a little trouble in his heat race. but came back to win the "B· Main and then advance to the • A· Main and win it. The 650Cc class saw different winners in each event. Tom Woodard. Coos Bay. Oregon riding a Triumph took the heat race. then Bob McLane, Grants Pass on a BSA moved in to take the Trophy Dash.
