Until late in the race it looked like it was going to be just that as Fred Nix, the defending 20 mile champion, had taken fast time trial honors and won his heat race. George Roeder and Roger Reiman also won their heat race events and the only non-H-D rider to crack the heat winners circle was BSA-mounted Dick Mann. Reiman took the measure of Nixon in his eight mile warm-up, Fred Nix topped sammy Tanner, Mann beat Draayer and Roeder, who had the fastest heat of the day. turned back Lawwill. down to the finish line with Roede r coming from third to edge Nix for second just as they crossed the finish line. Both Dick Mann and Reiman worked their way up to fifth place doring the 20 rider Final bot both went out with engine troubles. The engine quit at this point and Markel was towed to the pits and out of the Main Event. A record amount of lap money had been posted for this event and over $100.00 was riding o.n the leader of the first lap. Chris Draayer shot to the front and took tbe money back to utah before he lost his skid shoe and had to drop hack and settle for 4th place. Biggest lap prize winner was Fred Nix who took over on the second lap and led all the way through lap ten before Roeder caught him and took the lead. The Ohio farmer then led for five before Nixon moved up from third to take over on lap 16 and go on for his 10th national win and third title this year.
