JOHN R. CAPTURES BAY MAREĀ·
Story &I Photos by John Sbedd
Occasionally a rider or a motorcycle impresses the crowd a great deal,
but Sunday at Bay Mare was a real corker.
Monte DaIling, of Circle City
Cycle Center in Corona, turned over
his 450cc Honda to none other than
John Rice, and the combination was
absolutely unbeatable. Running with
the 4D-inch machines, John R. bested
them in the drag to the first comer
in the first two motos and pulled
away from them in the straights for
easy wins. In the third mota, John
R. was a bit slow off the line, but
out of the first turn, he was out in
front and walking away. John says,
-It goes so fast it'll scare ya-. The
machine is really a beauty, and
John R. did a beautiful job of bringing it in for the 650cc win. which
was probably a history-making ride.

The man to beat in the 250cc

first moto with a breeze. but had 't
little difficulty in the second when
he ran out of gas and had trouble
switching over to reserve; so he had
to settle for second. Keith wa.s back
in the third with plenty of gas and
took the win. George Omo was running a close second but took a nasty
spill which put him out of contentiar; and Ray McCarty took over
second spot.
Eug.ene Smith. on a Honda, was
the 350cc Amateur winner with Donald Teeters and Jerome Wahl, also
on Hondas, close behind. BSAmounted Teeter dusted off the competition to take the 500cc Novice
win, and Jerry Chap wheeled his

If Larry Shoemaker is the man to
beat in the 250cc Amateur class. he
is also the man to beat in the 650cc
Amateur class. At the start of the
last mota. Larry had a first and a
second and Jerry Hansen also had
a first and a second. From the time
the flag dropped, it w!>s neck and
neck all the way until the two went
down together in a cloud of dus t.
Hansen appeared to have a broken
leg but didn't want the ambulance
to leave until all the racing was
over. The Sinners said no to this.
so off he went. Larry went on to
take the win, but being the sportsman he is, gave Jerry the trophy.
The 650cc novice class wound
up the day with Triumph-mounted Al
Rollins taking the win. John Wiley
finished second and Dick Aiken,
third,
