~ TEEN-AGERS LEAD SIDEHACK ASSOCIATION a. CHAMPIONSHIP HARE SCRAMBLES ."., ~ = Pbo&os ..d story by Dick Wricbl 0> ~ - '" "" ~ '"' ~ lo;l ..:I ~ U It was a good Le Mans start. with Lon Petersonk Open Expert on a Rickman Triumph leading the pack to the smoke bomb, with Howard Beach. on a Triumph second. and Larry Bergquist. on a BSA Victor, in third. When they came through the pits after the first 24-mile loop of the four-loop race. it was Peterson and Beach neck-and-neck; these two teen-agers were really getting with it. steve Hurd and Bobby Ferro had moved to third and fourth spots, respecti vely. The Sidehack Association hosted the Championship Hare SCrambles in the desert near Adelanto last Sunday. The sun came out strong. and the riders were in for a real hot day of racing. The course was mostly deep and choppy sand. which added to the test of man and machine. The heat started to take its toll at this point. and a lot of riders were dropping out from heat prostration. The second time through the pits it was Peterson again. with Ferro now second. and Howard Jack· son. on a 250 Bultaco. running third. At this time. Bob Ewing took over the lead. with Gary Preston, Open Expert. in second. and Bill Hutton. on a 360 Husky. was third. It .was on this lap that J.N. Roberts. who ran 18th on the first loop. started to make his move. and was now running sixth. The last lap brought Ewing in from the heat, and Roberts pulled out all stops to come in for the win. with Gary Preston second and Jack Byers in third spot. Howard Jackson was the first 250 in and took fourth overall. Bruce Lewellyn. on a Triumph. was the first Open Amateur. and Mase Ryan, also on a Triumph, was the first Open Novice. After it was all over, we discussed the race with J.N. Roberts, who told us. "This was the hardest race I have ever been in. The heat was really getting to me!" Roberts' Husky is tuned by Tracy'S of Burbank, and the engine is stock. He is just a good rider who can turn a bike up to its tOIl speed and keep lit there. Roberts is now the number one rider in the desert by quite a margin. winning seven consecutive Hare & Hounds and Hare Scrambles. and two of the last four European Scrambles. a record which has never been accomplished before.
