SIEMS STAI, AITHUI IIOn'IG IAfflES Y AIlS AT PfPPfISJ. by Jack Mercer Pepperell, Mass., June 4: Thanks to Bob Hicks of -Cycle Sport,- and some of his gung-ho scrambles colleagues in New England we got a taste of mota-cross racing atPepperell. Bob and his buddies managed somehow to pay the transportation of British motocross champ, .Arthur Browning, ex-champ of Spain, Oriol Bulto, and a couple of hot Canadian rough-riding aces. The result was the International Mota-cross. It was well-attended by northeastern standards, despite all kinds of local competition like a hillclimb, a motorcycle blessing, etc. .Almost all the heats and finals were exciting, but the big thrill of the day was the unorthodox-and winning-style of English rider .Arthur Browning on one of two very special -and very hot-Greeves 360 models -new one-lungers called -Challengers.- They are just that too, and ,Arthur blew off everything that raced against him-good CZs (one ridden by Dickie Mann on a friendly loan basis) and some fairly-good Bultaco 250s. Browning spent about ~s of his riding time on the pegs, and his control is remarkable, especially on the grassy sections of the special motocross layout dreamt up by Bob Hicks & Company. . .rtt.IIII.llarYtlI pIcltlld III. And it was the gre at Stanl ey Woods, spriteiy as ever, who was the first to congratulate Hallwood as he finished. He said: -There's no doubt, he is fantastic. Also there to congratulate Mike was his father Stan Hailwood and his great rival, Italian 500cc world champion Giacomo .Argostini. Hailwood, whose Honda-six handled badly throughout the entire race, won by 1m. 18s. from his world championship rival Phil Read (Yamaha). Now Hailwood, Read, Bill Ivy and Ralph Bryans have each won one race in this year's championship series. Bryans finished third on the second six cylinder Honda but Ivy (Yamaha) retired when lying third on the fifth lap. It was a hard -race with many retirements. Both the works MZs retired, the Yamaha of .Akiyasu Motahashi broke down, and John Cooper looked all set for fifth place when his Kawasaki seized on the mountain on the last lap. He pushed the last few miles to the finish. Due to problems and the uncertainty of the future of Greenwood Raceway at Des Moines, the 110Mile National Championship race scheduled for saturday and Sunday, August 5th and 6th, will be moved to Indianapolis Rac eway Park (8 miles from Indianapolis), near Clermont, Indiana.
