Of course there are always the complainers wbo snivel if they don't get enough racing and sni vel if tbey get wbat they feel is too mucb, or snivel some more if tbey have to sit around for a while. The Open Novices who usually bave to sit around for hours and then count themselves lucky if tbey get three laps, actually bad a ten lap MalD and you should have seen their faces wben the starter gave them the word! Anyway, it was Terry Dorsch (Triumpb) who breezed away with the win. Bear Bags Tacos Anyone take a good look at that new 230 Ossa that Danny Carlton had out in the 250 class? What a beautiful little Bear and does it haul! Dan would have been right uP tbere in that olass but for a real hard fall and we suspect that there is going to be some suPe~tuning done on 'Tacos wben some more of these little jewels get out on the tracks. Dan took home first place trophy for the 175 class and once more we're going to gi ve one of our little plugs for shops who really belp racers goes through to stay racing. Teot Toot In this case we're tooting the born for Hookie's and if you run a tw~stroke such as a Hodak&. a Greeves or an Ossa they could just be the people to work on your scooter. er. lleot_or. Race Going down the line to the little bikes, it was sure good to see Kirk McDowell put in a couple of appea~ ances again in scrambles. A lay-off hasn't burt hi s riding ability any! Kirk will probably kill us for telling, T. Carroll In lull c..tnIl of a I_dous Trlump....... s... The Great Race Tbe great race of the night came wben tbe 250cc Experts rolled the1r bikes out to the line. Mark Brelsford, riding a Bultaco, and Jim Odom, on a Montesa put on a slam-bang duel witb Brelsford taking the lead and holding it all tbe way. Odom was trailing him by only a matter of incbes and sometimes you could bear tbe bikes banging into each other in tbe turns. One of tbe spectators said Illy- au 'Wf Iinle es liar 2ta. TIle facilities _III as Mel crt .f Ml riM 1l1li they were so close they looked like a bride and groom going on tbeir boneymoon. Side by Side One of the more memorable races of the evening came during the 500cc Expert Main in whicb the first three leaders rode around side by side, as iftbey were connected to eacb other After some time the three bikes di~ entangled eacb otber and wben tbey crossed tbe line, it was Lloyd Houcbins first, witb Ray Vayell second, and the third place IDan, mystery rider witb number 63 S. Tben tbe big guys rolled tbeir bikes to tbe grid with the 650 Novices first up and pulled off one of tbe wildest starts ever seen at a motorcycle race. Luckily, nobody went down, and as tbe race progressed, Tiffin Mullenay emerged tbe leader witb Bray Trujillo and J.A. Mireault following closely behind. 650 Amateur action was highlighted by an easy win for Ronald Enos, while tbe 650 Expert class was taken by John Fry. -..... ,ar s~ .. but a little bird told us that one of the reasons for hi s lay-off bas been his studies. He bas received a Bank of America scbolarship for ,college and you don't get tbose witbout considerable work! Good luck, Kirk! 500 Expert Hair Raiser How about tbat 500cc Expert class? Don Ogilvie (Victor) could have won tbat except for a crasb on tbe second moto. He took on tbe redoubtable Chuck Minert and that last moto was a hair raiser. In the first moto, John Rice unloaded and ·Feets· . darn near bad to use his for traction! Later on down went Jobn again, over a bank this time past the downhill stretch and with all tbose long arms and legs of his cart wbeeling around, it was Quite spectacular! Jim Hunter blew in tbe third, but we suspect that be now realizes Victors run faster than be previously thought tbey did. But as a vote for tbe most powerful bike in tbe class we'll tab Monte Darling. That Hond~ of his is ferocious and be had the lead and was flat going a COuPle of times. He just couldn't bold on to what he had gained. Best Race Probably the best race of tbe day (and it was racing, not a scrap) came lD tbe Open Expert class during the third moto. Ben Fakkeldy (we've said before, watcb this boy) had a first and a second, wbile C.H. Wbeat had a first and a tbird, but two first will always win out. Turn after turn C.H. wo uld pull all tbe little tricks of tbe trade be's learned over tbe years as an Expert to try to get by, but young B n (first year Expert) wasn't having any. It was beautiful, clean, bard racing and tbere was mucb back slapping and hand shaking wben it was all over. It was a long long day but at least the riders can't say they didn't get to race! And we get tbe news that eventually Perris will be baving Saturday night racing during tbe summer. watcb Cycle News for furtber information on tbe starting date. (It _ _ e 21)
