~ 1>1) fROM THE ANDES TO THE SIERRAS 8Y SCOOTER os ~ THE ADVENTURES Of AL AND ROSIE SAVOROSO fLORES Last week we welcomed two travelers from Lima, Pem, Mr. and Mrs. Alberto and Rosario Flores Savoroso. Alberto and his wife are taking notes on the customs and idiosyncrasies of the countries they travel through. When they return to Peru, some time in December, Alberto will write a dissertation of his travels for his Doctorate in Law. Already a graduate lawyer at 22, Alberto found it hard to get clients because of his youth. Rather than waste time growing older, he devised this trip and got the professors at Lima to accept it as his doctoral studi es research. Scooter Replaces Stork? En route, Rosario, whom the doctors had pronounced unable to have children, got pregnant. She grew more pregnant as the trip progressed and doctors predicted she would miscany whether she continued on the scooter or not. So Rosario and Alberto rode on, she astride the bumpy pillion of an overloaded Lambretta and in a Texas maternity ward she gave birth to the healthiest baby boy you ever saw. Rosario is sure that the scooter ride cured something that the doctors couldn't, OOt Alberto remains skeptical of that. Faced with their unexpected bless' ing, the couple lucked into a friend who was flying to Lima and prevalled upon him to take the baby, whom they named America in honor of her birthplace. home to her aunt. Free once again to pursue their studies, the couple headed west, generating publicity in the newsPaPers of nearly every town they passed through. had to drag Alberto away while the operation was being performed, but we assured him that geniuses need privacy and that was that. Tuned & Ready to Go And so. with scooter repaired and credit cards in hand. the young travelers headed North to Canada, Then they'll go east to New England, where they face the problem of getting to Europe with their Lambretta. They are not allowed to work while they are in the States, and the money frQm home is running low. Perhaps time will run out before they accomplish their goal of riding around the world on their scooter, but they should have collected plenty of idiosyncracies by that time. RICHMOND SCRAMBLES Good Neighbors CaliforniaLambretta's service genius lived UP to his hilling, for when he got through with the scooter a whole binful of parts that had been hashed up by primiti ve mechanics along the 15,000 miles the sc;ooter had come lay discarded and were replaced by new spaceage comPonents. skillfully installed. Lambretta. story and Pbotos by Jobn Ramos The Berkeley Marina played host to some 3,000 spectators and 225 riders May 21 st, for a scrambles, sponsored by the Richmond M.e, It was a well organized affair and had aU the hoopla associated with it that one would find at a Marina festival. It was the first scrambles that I have ever seen that you could come to via motorcycle, car, boat, airplane, water skis. helicopter and kite. The only thing missing was anybody arriving on the race course decked out with scuba diving gear. Most exciting race of the afternoon, of course, was the 650cc Expert Main. The lead was taken by Triumph riding Dave Faria who slid and slid and slid all the way up to the checkered flag. Second was taken b,Y Larry Davidson, also on a Triumph while thud went to Ray Vowell. Brave and Gutsy Althou~h the racing was close and exciting in nearly all of the classes represented, the 100cc Amateur race was one for brave and gutsy people. It pitted three of the fastest Amateurs in the North against each other and wowee, what a race it was! After two restarts, it was the Sargenti Brothers (better know as the Hodaka Brothers) running side by side clear up until the finish line when Stinkie finally edged out Jack. Third was Harry Dring on a Moto Beta that really hauls. They were running lap times on all the race s and it is hard to believe that the time difference between the 650 Experts and 100cc Amateurs was only three tenths of a second! Everyone wh 0 attended loved the show and several of the riders were see going around and inquiring about the time the next race would we run. In Los Angeles the travelers were guests of Cycle News while their scooter was checked out by California Lambretta's ace checker-outer, a former racing tuner named Gil. Alberto feared that Gil's racing knowledge alone was not sufficient to cope with the intricacies of the Lambretta innards. but we assured him that racing tuners make the best all-around mechanics and from the sound of his scooter he needed one.
