Speedway. Graham Speedways played host to 3120 spectators and 147 of the finest riders in the Northwest of this May 30th race to the tune of a$1440 purse. Ahola Troances Best in West Ahola outperformed such stars as Dusty Cowage of California_SOnny Burres of Portland, number one rider in TI point standings in the nation as of this date. and National Number one rider in TI point standings in the nation as of this date. and National Numbers 67 Glen Adams of Portland. 62 Dick Taylor of Kirkland (1964 high point rider in the United states), and Don McLeod, 1965 Novice champion, now riding Expert. The racing was marred by only one serious crash. In the sweeper turn at the end of the straightaway. on the first lap of the Amateur • A· Main, six of the twel ve motorcycles in the heat mixed in a spectacular series of collisions. While no one was seriously hurt, rising young star Mark Williams of Cottage Grove. Oregon. was sidelined for the remainder of the day. Matchless is Peerless In the 15-lap Main Event, .Ahola on his Matchless led from start to finish with Dave Clarke of Seattle. riding a Harley-Davidson and finishing second, giving him no serious trouble. SOnny Burres of Portland was nearly a half lap behind Ahola v; c:: .... in placing third on his Triumph. Fourth was Dick Jagow of Portland. also aboard a Triumph. The huge perpetual trophy, presented to .Ahola as winner of the race. brought cheers from the fans and a gleam to the eyes of the recipient. Oregon and British Col umbia were both well represented in the race as was Eastern Washington: Gary Boyce. Amateur class, and Rick Dean in the Novice class, came from Aspen. Colorado. to compete. The addition of about $3000 worth of clay and uncounted hours of hard labor has turned this track from a semi-gravel pit into a first class TT track. The Tacoma Motorcycle Club, sponsor of the annual classic, is to be commended for their contribution to professional racing in this area. Rain Dance & Prayers The threat of rain. which of course is ridiculous in the Tacoma area. was held off all afternoo n by the combined rain dances of this correspondent and prayers every thirty minutes. However, due to this threat, the Expert heats were run first, then the Novice and finally the .Amateurs.
