Forty to fifty riders held a crowd of 250 to 300. spellbound as they slipped and slid around a short, short, flat track and amazed them with skill and daring. In some instan.ces. the handle-bars would be dragging the ground as they laid into the turns. Joe Henery took off like crazy and led from start to finish but Sparky Pinola was right on his tail while James Cable and Ken Wood were fighting it out for third place. The next 100cc heat started with a bang in that Earl Grant got off the line first only to have Corkey Corcoran take it away from him in the first turn. Try as he would Earl couldn't get the lead back. He just didn't have that little extra something, until the last lap when he and Corky hit the finish line together, we're not sure who got the nod - it was that close. Paul Minor showed the troops around in the next heat. and Ria.k Smith, James Childress and Duke Ellington were having their own little race, to see who could out-do the other for the rest of the places. Precision Riding Ray Vatne and Bill Dixon put on a precision riding display in the 250 Novice heat. neither one really having the better of it. In the Main it was the same story: wheel-to-wheel, lap after lap. First one would gain a little. then the other, until about the last lap or so when Ray and his HD pulled abead. Ralph Gutierrez started off like he really had the 250 Am-Ex. heat sewed up but Carl Cranke and his rigid frame Cub had other ideas. Carl would lay it down in the turns with his handle bars touching. One would swear he was going down. but he never did• The only 100 Novice Semi, Hugh Toby won but had trouble in the Main and could do no better than third after a short battle with Corky and Spark. Earl Grant got off first in the Main but had to give in to Joe Henery. Paul Minor won the 100 Am-Ex. Main after being pushed real hard by Rick Smith and Rick Whiteacre. Toward the end James Childress came charging from the back of the pack but could do no better than second. (Results oa pa.e 21)
