Weekends on Wheels Pauslne on the Yamaha Fun Ride to take a short ....tiler and check over their _nts, participants we.. mel by a IIIaR and wife an Id..llcal Veloceltes WIN A N WARM DAY'S RIDE A motorcycle ride we were invited to on a recent Sunday proved to be most enjoyable for everyone who attended. We met at the Tips Restaurant in Castaic Junction at 9:30 for coffee, and at 10 o'clock we had a short caravan for a few miles up to the ·old ridge Road.' The weather was in the nineties but dry. It felt wonderful while riding and only a bit on the warm side when stopped. We had a leisurely ride for some 25 or 30 miles completely free of all traffic. Instead of dodging Fords and Chevrolets we dodged chuckholes and squirrels. We rode 3 miles up a dirt road to the Liebre Lookout Tower. Scenery was a highlight of the ride. Because of the unusual amount of rainfall this year, the meadows were a lu'ih green and heavy with wild flowers of gold, orange and purple. After that it was about 15 mile ride over a seldom-used, scenic, and very winding road called Pine Canyon to a gas stop and one cold glass of beer. Another ten miles took us into Lake Hughes and' our lunch stop. About 15 miles of the winding Lake Hughes Road past many streams and camping areas, brought us to a dirt road which runs for about 10 miles through the mountains from Lake Hughes Road to Castaic Canyon Road. Upon entering this road we were warned by some Boy SCouts that it was a rough road. They were right! It was full of deep washes, ruts and many. many streams and mudholes which had to be forded. We arrived back at the ·old ridge Road· tired but happy at 5 O'clock. We loaded the smaller bikes and went to Don Gately's house for lemonade and much animated conversation about the day's ride. BIG ASCOT WEEKEND One of the bigger motorcycle racing weekends of the season is coming up Friday and saturday evenings (June 2-3) at Ascot Park. Action starts at 8:15 both evenings. There will be the regular Friday evening flat-track meet, followed by a steeplechase session saturday. The two shows will involve 250 riders. Dan Haaby, .AI Gunter, Sammy Tanner, Mert Law'ltill, Mel Lacher, Chuck Jones and Chris Draayer are among the leading threats in the flattrack meet. The steeplechasers will see such standouts as Eddie Mulder, Dick Hanuner, Jack Sinunons and Skip Van Leeuwen joining battle, along with most of the riders who go in Friday night's competition. 100 Y,..,.""
