He rode tbe sandwasb like a fire road and held tbe lead all tbe way to the finisb line. J.N. Roberts pulled in second and Larry Bergquist came in third. By the 250 Novice race the course was really chewed up but Earl Roeseler was able to pull ahead of the pack and come up to the finish line in first spot. Dexter Halldin pulled in second. Next up were the.250 Amateurs. Bill Ydillno #105x grabbed the lead with stan Phillips holding second spot. Ydiano still held the lead on the last lap, but 300 yards from the finish line, his bike quit and he got off and started pushing. The first trail bike race started at 9 :00 a.m. with the Antelope Ramblers. At the drop of the banner, they headed for a narrow trail that went over an off camber hill side and into a deep sandwash. The wash twisted through the canyon for about a mile: They made a right turn out of the wash and onto a rolling hilly trail. The race lasted forty-five minutes and Jack Morgan on a Hedaka was the winner. Tom Ruddy on a Van-Tech was second. Richard Phillips grabbed the lead and turned it on to hold first spot to the finish line. Al Baker on a Maico pulled in second and took first 500. The combined Open and 500 Amateurs were ready to go as soon as the last Novice pulled in. Gene Smith waS able to come out on top to take first spot, with Ray Bierman taking second spot. Howard Jackson took the lead, with Bob Belt right behind him pushing hard. On the third lap, Jackson took the right hand trail to jump into the sand wasb and Belt turned it on and took the trail to the left and made the pass. Belt led the rest of the way to the finish with Jackson pulling in seconr'. After the race JaclCSiln said: -Bob Belt just doesn't make mistakes, he also is in the right gear at all times. It was really fun racing with him.The'Dusters started off the day at 9:00· a.m. with the 250 Novices. The second race uP was the 250 Amateurs. There was so much raCing going on that I missed both of those races. I was able to catch the last lap of the 250 Experts. This was another fast race between Bob Belt the winner, and Howard Jackson taking second. The trail bikes went off at 1:45. Jack Morgan also was the winner of this race, with Greg Miller pulling in second. Richard Philli~ pulled off his second win of the Clay by taking the combined Open and 500 Novice race, but it was not an easy win because S'pence Windbi el was pushing him hard and took second spot. Jerry Perkins was able to take the win in tl$ big bore Amateur class with Mase Ryan moving in to take second. John Coots was making a determined bid to take over the leaders, but he had to settle for a solid third. Follow the Orange Tunic The race everyone was waiting for was the combined Open and 500 Expert. At the start, it was the orange shirt of steve Hurd and his Matchless in front wi th·J.N. Roberts on a Husky and Dick Dean on a Triumph close behind. Coming up to the thirty foot drop off into the sandwash, it was Roberts and Dean at the same time. They both looked at each other and turned it on and they both jumped into the wash at the same time. Roberts was able to find the better groove and took over the lead and held it all the way to the finish line, with Dick Dean taking second and Jack Byers taking third.
