Located a mile or so west of the little town of Lincoln, the track is laid out on what looks like old, old placer diggins, with lots of shade trees, ample space for walking around and enough trails so that the everpresent pit racers are not much of a problem. And the trees are not confined to just the spectator area. The course winds in and out of the trees like one of the Sierra Club's ··nature walk- trails. There are two jumps, one a conventional earth hump, the other actually a shallow gulley where the exiting bikes get airborne but good. Challenging Couse It is a good example of the allaround track. There is a long straight where the horsepower lads can really screw it on, culminating in a banked first turn, which leads into the above mentioned gulley, and a straight. At the end of the short straight there is a hard right turn around a tire-padded tree, another jump, more zigs and zags through the woods and then a fairly easy left-hander that opens out onto the straight again. All bends bave escaperoute5 and restarts on the -twodown-in-tbe-first-eorner- r u I e are Never was a starter watched more intently, but Don got a little better start and led the pack around the first turn. Poor Ron was buried in the throng, gnashing his teeth. Don was opening up a little bit, even at this early stage.. when he touched his front brake ligbtly to set himself uP for the drop into the shallow gulley. And then he ran afoul of the worst of bad luck - the backing plate on the front wheel jumped the anchor lug, wound up the brake cable and down he went, taking another bike with him. No great deal of damage done. but as two riders were down in the first turn the event was restarted. Better Luck Next Tille On the restart Ron made a good start and never looked back. Don? Surprisingly, this is a new club but tbeir first race was so good tbat the word spread fast, and the second tim e no less tban 209 riders showed up, a fantastic turnout for an out-oftbe-way place like Lincoln. Riders came from as far as Reno, witb balf from tbe Bay Area. Tbe racing was good in all classes, but the race many of us were looking forward to didn't come off. Exactly. Hapless Novices 350 Novices Ron Davies and Don Murray have run each other time and time again on their howlin' hot Hondas, with Ron always winning. A couple of weeks ago at Lodi Ron slid through the mud a little faster than Don for a 1-2 finish. At the fir st Hungry Holler scrambles Ron beat Don. At the Rodeo Grounds event in Lincoln some weeks backi Ron was following Don when Don came off the jump into a fallen bike and went down. Ron got a second there. Don nothing. This might have been the last round of the duel, for if Ron won, he would have enough points to transfer to the Amateur Class. Don ran out of gas in practice and Ron came up with enough petrol to finish the day. Calilomlaas sa, 111•• Is nol1lloe like _In, a ....... or sera-lila . . . . . .111 sllado trHs. SAN DIEGO SCRAMBLES by ste ve Fisk Sunday May 14, opened with a mild, warm breeze blowing under a scorching sun, not at all perfect racing conditions, but to the tigers that race in san Die go, it didn't make one bit of difference. Three weeks ago Don Emde showed his skill on his Bultaco Lobito when he won the 90cc Novice Main Event here at Dehesa. Today Don once again rode off the starting line and held the lead to the finish. He should be Expert soon, running his Bultaco against the four and fi ve year veterans. Jim McGuire overtook Bill Silverthorn's attempts to score at the end of the day by placing first overall in the 90cc Expert class. The 250 Novices rated enough riders, as usual, to have heats and a Main Event. Earl Barker ran past his opponents in the Main to capture first place in that event. Carl FenDing rode his Bultaco to capture the second place trophy, followed by Ken Renick who took third place honors. The 250 Experts added their usual fine show to the days events. with Bill Silverthorn leading Dick Mills to tbe motocross points vietory. All 500 Experts ran an excellent race, the like of whicb is usually seen at Dehesal Don Finan took prime points in that eventl Don Stoutner, a local rider who hasn't been racing for Quite a while, poured on the courage and determination typical to capture second place laurels. MJI"I Takes 1 BIW The Norton-Triumph battle raged again. Al Finan rode hard on his multi-horsepower Norton, but couldn't shake off or overtake the No. 1 rider in San Diego, Myron Carter. After taking the flag in the second moto, Myron went on to promptly crash in the following curve. Said Myron "It was just to thrill the spectators." (????) It was the same story in all three powder puff motos with Shirlee Newson placing first, Carol Chiara running second, and san Diego's girl of the track, Carol Gooding, taking third. As tbe day ended, San Diego riders returned to their disguises as normal, everydayk citizens, but watch out in three weeks when the tigers of San Diego rip each other in wheel to wheel competition on the Dehesa track. All spectators and riders are urged to attend this event. (Results _ PlI&e 16)
