First order of the day was the 100cc Novice Main, which was won hy Hondamounted Frank Gillespie without any trollhie. The 100cc Amateur Main, which followed, was one of the most hotly contested events of the day. Roger Smart (Yamaha) and S. R. Hockley (Honda) fought wheel to wheel for the lead until the latter lost his chain. Steve Lazzdrini, also on a Honda then moved UP to second. Hockley managed to put his chain back on, and had he ridden as bard for the first three laps as he did after his chain came off, he would have won hy a mile. Fast Blltacas The 200cc Novice race showed a photo finish for the first four places. It is difficult to say who was leading most of the time with the riders cornering three ahreast through most of the turns. When the results came out, they showed Bill Dawson as first, with Boh Hoffmann and Paul Babo second and third respectively. A two-way contest ensued in the 200 Amateur Main between Jim Denny and Lance Anderson, hoth on Bultaco Sherpas. Both riders rode side by side until Denny niPped Anderso:l in the last few feet. Cliff Spair a CZ-mounted 250cc Novice earned the title of "Speedie Gonzales" for his unblemished perforj ance in the heat and for his fantistic riding in the Main. Cliff broke off the line sixth in the Main but zipped through the pack with the speed of sound to take the checkered flag first. As usual, the 250 Exp~rt race was an all Bultaco show. The sPeedy machines from Madrid garnered the top three spots, with Jim saltone emerging as the winner.
