Ever get the patriotic urge to see a hometown lad beat the T-shirts off the racing champions of foreign lands? California's Dan Gurney, car racer by profession. cycle rider by preference, is trying to give us that thrill. Recently Mobiloll, wbic1l used to be an Eagle sponsor, pulled out, leavine Dan to make out the best be could with only Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. to belp with the tails. Let that be a lesson to us: Doo't buy any more Mobil gas. Use GUmeygas. No man, you've got to be kidding. It·s just not possible ," ·No, I'm telling you the truth. Pack's gonna scale the highest palm tree at Ascot and dive off it. We're going to put Butch half way UP the tree with a parachute and he's going to hand it to Pack on the way down." ·And then?" ·Pack's going to grab it and release the chute before he hits the ground.' • And he'll do all that within 70 feet? With no net underneath?" ·Sure'- Sound impossible? Not if you hear it from Evel Knievel, daredevil par excel- MORE FLATTRACK FRIDAY (WE HOPE!) FLATTRACK RACING AMA SAN CT. Yes, this is the latest stunt he has concocted for the Evel Knievel stunt show, scheduled for Ascot Park this Saturday night at 8 p.m. The man who will be performing this unusual feat is Rod Pack, the only man who has ever jumped from an airplane wi thout a parach ute and lived to tell about it. Also scheduled for Saturday night is Evel's longest ramp-to-ramp jump to date, stunts by Skip Van Leeuwen, Eddie Mulder and Swede Savage, firewall crashes, and a demolition derby. Worth seeinll:? You bet! Ascot Preview A banner field of more than 150 motorcycle riders is entered in the second American Motorcycle Association race of 1967 Friday night (APril 28) at Ascot Park. Post time for the first race 1S 8:15. Action starts at 7. There is both quality and quantity in the field lined UP by J.C. Agajanian. Sammy Tanner, the four-time Pacific Coast Champion is again the man to beat, weather permitting. But the quantity is in the news category. There were more than 160 riders in the opening show of the season two weeks ago. The program called lor 18 events. It was necessary to expand that to 25 even 1s to make room for all the competitors. The fans will probably get a bonus agaln Friday in the way of more races. Tanner figures to get his stiffest test from amongst Mert Lawwill of San Francisco, Chris Draayer of Salt Lake, Lawndale's Dan Haaby. Dick Hammer of Lakewood, Gene Romero of San Luis Obispo and Mel Lacher of San Diell:o. Whereas the EXPerts dIaw most 01 the public attention. riding action also figures to be intense in the Novice and Amateur divisions.
