COOLEY'S COLUMN MISSED I have a nearly complete files of Nat!. m/c mags and weekly local m/ c newsPllDer since 1957 when my son Paul started sportsman competition riding. Your ·Cycle News" bas shown most improvement (& longevity) of any of them. r Ithink omission of "Coolies Column" is a mistake. All news doesn't have to be favorable. Maybe Cooley has a fair number of readers agreeing with parts of his Articles. Why not continue to print his column, if ne cessary adding a note that· Cycle News· does not necessarily agree with all his stands on various matters. Congratulations anyway. OLINS. HUNT Woodland Hills (·Thanks, Olin. Fact is, Cycle News does oot necessarily agree with all of anyone's stands on various matters. see below.") COOLEY COMPLAINS so STOICHIOMETRISTS TAKE NOTE: Your answer to D.C., Hemet (March 23 issue) was but not strictly accurate. True, an engine will run hottest at "Stoichiometric" - which means that the fuel-air mixture is in theoretically correct ratio for complete burning. Note the word "theoretically." If an engine is properly designed and properly tuned, some running at stoichiometric fuel-air ratio should not prove disastrous. Maximum steady state power (top speed) is obtained at a fuel-air ratio aPproximat'ely 10% rich. At this ratio, peak combustion temperatures are about 2% lower than at stoichiometric. Due to the fact that gasoline has a hi gher density than air, and a correspondingly greater inertia, for best all-round performance, jetting should be .slightly richer 10% still. Jetting slightly leaner than Stoichiometric will result in a reduction of combustion temperature, and your best mileage carburetor setting is slightly lean. Further leaning can lead to such complications as burned valves or, on two-strokes. stuck and burned pistons. If you are prone to argue, I Quote as my source Dr. C. Fayette Taylor. of MIT, and his excellent advanced text "The Internal Combustion Engine." In any event, I do enjoy your paper, especially the calendar. ROB HARRlSON Pomona there is no misunderstanding, the following is a statement which I sent out to A.C.A. members: ·Many of you may have been wondering what happened to Cooley'S column in Cycle News. If you follow my column regularly, you will realize that several weeks ago I was criticized by the Editor for my views on the ANA and the Daytona race, and, in general because my column was Quite controversial. Because of the basic difference of opinion as to what a contri botor can write in his column. I feel if I am going to be censored, my column would be of no use or value to the reader, so I am temporarily discontinuing my weekly column in cycle News. I do intend to continue advertising in the publication, listing Our events in the Calendar of Events. and sending in results and articles concerning our events, and hope the publication will find space to run these." I have had so many inquiries in the last several weeks about my column that 1 decided to clarify the situation in my Bulletin. I think possibly this will get you off the hook, since actually you have been changing and censoring my column Quite a bit. This way, your advertisers won't be bothering you about Wes Cooley in the future. and since you don't have to read any other column as closely as mine, this will save you a great d.eal of time. It's been fun and I'm sorry it couldn't have oontinued. I think it was good for your publication, but naturally I realize you can't afford to be harrassed or pos- Publillber_••_ Chac.. If you wish to bypass the editorial desk you might consider taking a paid ad to exptess your shakier opinions. That Bulletin must cost a bunch'") THE TIME HAS COME On APril 9, 1967 a most distasteful disregard for the majority was perpetrated against the real desert riders, at the Victors Hare and Hound. For months the run was advertised to start at 10 sharp. This never happened. The start was put off until 11, in order to allow the latecomers a chance to ride. The majority was not even taken into consideration. Gene Carter was informed that the run would not start at the given time. And what did he do? NOTHING. Is this the way a person who wants to represent us in Columbus should act? If he can not stand uP to one club, how can the riders of District 37 exp ect him to stand UP in Columbus? Let's set UP the rules so that majority will benefit: 1. When a club sets a starting time, the race will start at that time. If not that clu b will lose its points. 2. That the sign up will stop half an hour before the start. If not that club will lose points. 3. When the posters are made up, it will state how long it will take to arrive at the pits from a given point. BILL A. ZAREMBA Dynamites (One Of The Better Clubs) (·How do other Dist. 37 clubs reel about this?") EXPLORER SCOUTS Two specialty Explorer Scout posts for motorcycling will be formed for youths in the 14-16 year age group in Orange and Los Angeles counties in the near future. The Orange County post, scheduled to become operative next week, will he sponsored by local motorcycle dealers and will involve .a wide range of activities, including training for search and rescue missions, disaster communications. and teaching others motorcycle safety On highways and trails. The post will also en gage in En glish trials and rallies competition with other clubs. A plot of ground has been offered by tile Irvine Ranch for these purposes. Unlike the Orange County post, which is aimed primarily at youths already familiar with motorcycle operation, the L.A. County post is primarily for Explorer Scouts who do not know how to ride motorcycles. Training will be done by. a local law enforcement agency with the assistance of the Public Safety Department qf the Automobile Club of SOuthern California. For teaching purposes, BSA has donated fifteen new 250cc Starfires to the L.A. post.
