was backed UP Sunday wi th three fine riders for a teenager who is a Novice in the professional ranks. It was Romero's first time in lightweight competition. Dave Allee and Dave Damron dueled all afternoon for top honors in the l25cc to 200cc class. Allee defeated Damron twice by a whisker with Damron the winner over Allee once. Allee rode a Honda 160 while Damron was mounted on a Suzuki 200. Monte Pierce again rode his way to a trophy on a 125cc Bultaco in the class for that size machine. It was the third straight time that Pierce has been the victor. In the 100cc class it was Bob Deutschman on his Hodaka 90 over Yamaha mounted • Trigger- Traeger and Don Thomas, also on a Yamaha. The 50cc division was another allafternoon duel with John Hateley and Tom Rockwood taking turns winning. Hateley, on a Yamaha and Rockwood on a Honda, ran neck and neck three times out, with Hateley the winner in the final by four lengths. In the production division for the street machines, dirt tracker Butcb Landguth tried mad racing for the first time on a Suzuki 250 demonstrator that bad been sitting out in the rain all week and came bome a close winner over Dave Damron, also on a Suzuki 250. It was not decided until the 6...1 tum for tbe Main Event win. Paul Wilde won the 100cc production class on a Yamaha 100, and Larry Singer was again the first rider home in the 50cc class on a Mondial. Rich Thorwaidson tried road racing for the first time and finished third in the production 250cc class on a Bultaco and then returned to take eighth in the Grand Prix big bike class. There is enough power in a 50 for fun, and the cost of a teacup racer can be held to under $300 easily. At present. there are only an average of 5 entries in the 50cc Road race class at each event, so the trophies are pretty much UP for grabs, Fifties are divided into Production cycles (with headlights) and Grand Prix bikes (anything goes). Some associations further subdivide the G.P. class into Division I (5-speed gear boxes) and Division II (4-speeds and under.) X-& FACTORY SPECs. Go get yourself a 50cc motorcycle, preferably with at least 4 speeds, hand clutch and foot chift. Good candidates would be the new Mondial 50, the 5speed S.LS•• a Derbi 50 or one of the sporty Suzuki 50's. In addition there are much used 50's that would make good racers. These include the MotoBetas, Honda 50's, Tohatsus, ctc. Pay your money and take your choice. A used machine can be had for as litUe as $100 and the modifications might run another hundred or two. Then load your 50 in the trunk of your car and take a lesson at the bi-monthly Road Racing School in Pacoima (see Calendar). After a session or two at the RR school you'll be ready to win fame and trophies in the coming 50cc Production or Grand Prix class at the several road races coming up next month.
