VESCO TWINS UP AT CARLSBAD Another rider added his name to the rapidly growing list of big winners at the monthly AMA sportsman road races at Carlsbad Raceway. Joining Cal Rayborn as the only other double winner is Don Vesco from San Diego. Don, last Sunday afternoon, won the 250cc Main Event and then came back to take the trophy in the 500cc class aboard a different machine. Vesco on a Yamaha, and Gene ROmero on a Suzuki, supplied the action in the 2S0 class in the heat. semi. and finaL Romero took the lead on the first lap and was out in front until being sidelined with engine problems on the fourth lap in the eight-lap feature. vesco then took over to score his first lightweight win at his "home" road racing track. Returning for the big bike feature. Don climbed onto his BSA SOOcr twin and battled all the way with new pavement ace. Dusty Coppage. Coppage and the TriulDllh and Vesco and the BSA made it a torrid foursome all the way in the ten-lap final. wi th Vesco easing to a comfortable margin at the finish. Swede savage made his first appearance 00 the Daytona Honda 450 and made it a good one by finishing third with a stlOllg bid the last half of the race. Into The Haybales Early laps had savage and HoD SportsteMnoUDted Dale Alexander swapping third back and forth until Alexander missed the tipt number ooe tW'JI and sailed throup the h~ bales. He reo tw'ned later to finish sixth with savage a !lOlid third. Co_ge was a mild surprise as he was trying road racing for only the second lime. His previous outing was at ~tooa last month. Dusty, one of the top 17 riders in the nation, defeated Vesco in the semi-main before running a close second in the final to the veteran road racer from border town. Romero finished third, fourth, and IUtb in tllree times oot In the big bikes but was a cballenger many of tile laps. Vesco, Romero, Steve Pederson and Ron Pierce were the tour aces in the 2S0cc class. Pederson showed vast improvement over the race from two months ago and his tifth place finish at Daytona ..
