At 9:00 o'clock practice began, and a satisfying day ot scmmbles racing ensued. The Modesto M.C. track, featuring a beautiful new cushion surface. was a rider's paradise. First came two full hours of practice, then a series of six-lap heat races and lO-laP Main Events -plenty of racing for all. IlI1Iressive Novice Excitement started with the little bikes. The crowd was brought to its teet at the start of the 90cc Novice heat race and they were still cheering at the finIsh. Dennis Roberson, a 65pound supercharger riding a 50cc Tohatsu, who started in back of the 90's, led at the end of one lap and held it all the way. In the Main Event, the lead changed hands three times. steve Wallis and Jerry Clark battled it out for first as Roberson fought his way through the pack from sixth to third. The laps began to tell ot Roberson's Tohatsu and he slowed noticeably after the seventh time around. Wallis' Hodaka nosed out Clark's Bridgestone tor the win. Ray Ruff set such a sizzling pace in the 200-2:iOcc Expert class that only one other rnachille even f1nisbed the Dnal. SOle contender 10 Hufrs Rultaco at the end of ten laps was another Rultaco, that of Tom Clark. A really good fight tor first developed in the 500cc Novice division. Stan Stanton (Triumph) led all the way, but not without serious challenges from both Carl Leitner (Maico) and Dan Anderson (Triumph). Leitner, a 20o-pounder whose 360cc Maico moves his weight with surprising alacrity, pushed hard at the finisb, losing out by only a foot. Anderson held on for third. Ray Huff did it again in the 500cc Amateur Expert go. outlasting most of his competition except eager Amateur Bob Roche. Roche, who began racing last year under Huff's tutelage, showed that he had learned his lessons almost too well. The lead changed hands several times as student gave teacher a real workout. Both were mounted on 441cc BSA's. Novice 40-inch victory went to Roy Winters (BSA" who led throughout the Main Event and was never seriously challenged. Fellow BSA riders David Herring and B.J.
