•..••.••••••••••• 13 REBELS ••••••••••••••••• SCRAMBLE AT PRADO Report & Pbotos by Maureen Lee Pal Patrick on one of Ibose new-fangled Bullaco f1v..speeds, gels rudy 10 dive 10 Ibe Inside as Bob Ledford starts going a lillie blgh, The spHdy Irlsbman look on all comers with a bike rlghl out oIlbe crate and captured llie 250 Expert crown. Prado was bee-u-tiful Sunday, except for a hole in the track that was so deep and full of sand there may be someone stuck in it now for all I know, and it was just past tbe place wbere the first tum starts really tightening up. It made for some interesting experiences on several occasions, IxIt none was as spectacular as Ferdie Ortiz' when he shot straight across the track fUll bore, over a nice ledge of hard dirt and out into the plOUghed field. Somehow he didn't go down and made it hack onto the track. Great riding! Yerkes Howls Young David Sprayberry came down from Bakersfield to ride in the 50cc and 100cc Amateur class and took first in the 100cc event on a Hodaka with Larry Hammond (Honda) second, and Chris Smith on a Kawasaki, third. However, he didn't fare as well with the 50 brigade. That win went to Jay Lewis with Rick Parker in second (both on Yamahas) and Honda-mounted Don Alfred in third. The 100cc EXll ert class was a lI:ood 'un with Doug Yerkes aboard his ·Little Wolf" howling away from the pack in two out of the three matos, and Don Alfred taking the second place ove!'"ell, and a first in one mota. The 200cc Amateurs, who often have tor un with the 250's because there aren't enough of them, were lucky to have moto-cross heats and it was John Colombero who won that class with Joe Render in second, both on Bultacos. ln the 250cc Novice class a guy by the name of Bill McDowell won on a real pretty Bultaco, and although be went dam well, Pete Antisto and Mike Smith (also Bultaco) were rigbt there in contention. Riley's Back in Town Bultaco Blast The 250 EXllert class, as usual, promoted a lot of interest. Carl Patrick had one of those fast S-speed Pursangs to ride and had the usual group of hot contenders to fight oft. Come the first mota it was Bcb Leford on a Bul, who shot into the lead with Pat Patrick, David Ham !Montesa) and Keith MashIxIrn (Greeves)'hard after him. As Patrick moved up through tbe group and ran in second something (we suspect a momentary piston seizure) put Ledford out, although be did get it going again to finisb the mota and end UP fiftb over-all. For that we'll pat him on the back because be is an Amateur and that was an awful gaggle of hot-shoe Experts ch&8" ing him, In the second mota, Len Earl on his Harley-Davidson 2Domed into the lead with John Sprague (Bultaco) in second and David Ham in third. And that was the way it ended. Come the third moto, Patrick called on the luck of the Irish and won tbat one bands down with another good showing for the Bultaco. They may be ·funny looking- IxIt they sure go like bell. Dwayne Lundberg bll~tIIe big bole liard on bls way 10 a second In Ibe 250cc Amaleur class. Located In tile IIghl part of lbe flrsl IlrII, tile cavll1 developed a certain afflnll1 lor riders and los sed snv.al of them off. Nullh... try 10 go around It lellas! When the heavyweights made tbe scene, it was so early that no one could hardly believe it. As usual, the 500 class was won by Jim Hunter - but not without a fight. Larry Wilburn (Triumph) won one mota and got a second in anothel. was then trapped in traffic and ended UP second oveMll. For a class like tbe 500cc Expert this event was hoUy contested because Monte parlin!: on a Honda led at one point witb Ken Sparkman (Triumph) and John Heynemann on a Goldie all pitchin g in to make things interesting for Mr. Hunter. Open Expert laurels went to C.H. Wheat. C.H., who can tune a bike as well as he can ride one, got ott the line first and stayed there 'til the checker. Nicest thing in that class was to see Bill Riley back again. Bill has had a knee operation wbich we hear worked out well, and he is in action again. From the way be looked Sunday after that lone. lay-ott, we say to that class, -Look out boys! Riley's hack in town'Mike Van Acker, who has won several this year went down for the count tblee times in his heat, but won the semi and took second behind C.H. in the main. "In- joke for the day was tbat maybe be shouldn't laugh at geraniums On little old ladies hats! 'sPecially if said ladies have some Irish blood and an Irisb first name! Faith and begorra, some of us can call on the wee folk any cotton pickin' time we want' (Results DB pace 16)
