-BEGINNERS NUD RULES"
(co.ae.t)
If the readers of R.L. Sprayberry's recent letter are under the impression that
-BEGINNER'S NEED RULES- is the
voice of one man; tbey are mistaken.
It could be called a combined effort
or many. all with tbe same tbought who
have talked this over many times at
various races.
l'll admit tbat it has bad some voices
raised against it but mainly from tbose
wbo as the letter states are -pushing
tbeir sons alonC-.
As IIr. S~berry states, some have
a great deal of money invested in tbe
motor. tbere is a1so an out for tbose
wbicb says -to ride under tbeir present
status-.
I myself can see 110 objectioo to tbe
proposal since it coocerns us all and
will eliminate some of tbe -bent rulesof A.M.A. enforced by local officials at
at tbe home town races.

More 08 Youag Riders
Mr. sprayberry's letter concerning
young riders strikes me as being a step
in the right direction.
One rule that 1 would like to see
added would be -tbat no rider shall be
allowed to compete on any motorcycle
from whicb. when seated in a normal
riding position. he is unable to place
botb feet nat on tbe pound-. The abUit7 to stab a foot down at lbe proper

time is an absolute necessity for control
in scrambling.
The proposal to start the -probationary novice- in the rear is an excellent
one. Besides preventing some nasty
situations enroute to turn one. it would
give the yaung rider a cbance to observe
tbe - shoes- in front. There is no quicker
metbod of leaming tbe short way around.
Rather than have tbe beginning rider
run witbout a mnnber plate. let's assi£ll
him a plate but for tbe duration of his
probationary period, place a red border
on the plate (plastic tape.) In addition
to this, he would have a stripe of the
same matertaI on the back of his helmet
and anotberon the rear fender of the bike.
There are several reasons for this
suggestion. Number plates are ImPOrtant
to tbe YOUDg rider. They identlfy him
and his bike as something special. The
red trimmings would assist tbe starter
in making a quick line-up and, during
practice or a long race, would alert an
overtaking rider as to tile capab1llties
of tile man in front of him.
I would like to see tbe probationary
period extended to five races. At the
end of this period it would be a great
toucb to have a District '37 Competition
Committee member, District lIt or the
ranking official at lbat partiCUlar race
remove the stripes and congratulate the
rider.
While we are on lbe sllbject or young
riders. bow abollt a scbool for them?
Take an open SUnday, a Competition
Committee member or two, three or four
expert riders and you could teacb the
kids more than they could learn in
months of racing.
All of this may seem l.il
