• • CAL POLY • • PATIENCE By Robert B...uUonl HI-MOUNTAIN ENDURO . Annual endurance- that's tbe key taken in band bY the Penguins of San Luis Obispo. These Cal Poly guys and one gal beld their 17th Annual Enduro on a crispy sunlit Sunday two weeks ago. UP near the base of a mountain wbich ranges around tbe town of Santa Margarita, 295 plus riders gathered to sprawl and Lour the ninety-seven miles (depending on your loop) of a billygullied curve which windfulls teases each rider's skill. All departed for the hills in groups of fi ve in an amazing 1 hour and 30 minutes. Close to the first check some guy left the course yelling at bis error. The trail whisked right around and a cbecker indicated tbe forty-mile gas check. Here bY adding his riding number to the key time posted, each rider could tell if he was -bot- or late. Arter sixtyfi ve miles of some narrow trails and rutlined swoops, tbe noon check appeared for a half-hour of eats, relaxing and delight. "0 a o '" .. ell -; Cl 01 . :l C Enduro Delights Charllnl down the last stretch to thepavement. :;: Walking around this little triangular shaped stop-off we see an old threewheeled railroad trolley, Sl)me ancient farm tools and two crows in cages that occasionally cawed at a 2-sLroke fuming by. Past the seagrave fire truck. we spot a bait shop and near the Indian statue tbere's a rock shop. Here one can find flints from tbe Porno Reservation and small fossils looming in shale. The course retraces itself in one area for about twenty miles and spurts on down the lime-ringed circuit, proceeds UP a group of curves and down again through one mud lllltcb whicb reQuired no shifting. The patb next sprouts into a brief rocky slide and onto the paved road. Flatout no...... Ho.. does it feel?', a breeze-in. Ahead those uP and down and all around miles strai gil t to that final check. The Penguins MoC. of California Polytecbnic College provided a well marked course, with current events radioed Lo key time points and even lent helPing band as needs be. Observing the interim one could see faces gleaming wbile enjoying their fun and bikes spouting perfumed energy as kids smile in tune.
