lUSTE Hillell BHE ES Report aDd Pboto by JobD A. Wblte, Jr. The -Motor Bike Riding Farmers· from Hollister, California consistently take their share of trophies when it comes to hill climbing, Pictured, left to right, are: Don Castro, 3rd place - 250cc Novice; Gregg Rondy, 1st place 650cc Novice and 2nd fastest time of day; Leonard Garcia, 1st place - 200cc Novice; Sam Lomanto, 2nd place - 650cc Novice and last but not least, John Lomanto, with the fastest time of day and 1st place 650cc expert trophy. John's time was 6.56 seconds. while Gregg's time was 6,91 seconds for the 230 foot climb at -Cycle Hills· on Halls' Ranch near Gilroy. The event was staged by the Campbell Motorcycle Cluh, Sunday, February 12th. One can speculate that the Hollister boys learn a lot about bike riding from John Lomanto because John is always around the pits and starting line belping the boys with everything from mechanical problems to showing· where the best spot is to attack the hill-. The sport benefits a lot from riders Hke John who, although very competitive. are always willing to help the other fellow. All the riders pictured .keep their bikes in' top shape at Hall's Motorcycles in Gilroy. . . . . .. . . .... . . 1967 1J~4t ~~ e4le1UU4 I" 'z:>t4tlUet 4 36 & 37 I.lis." ••r J. . . . . . . . . . .. . . .. . . . . . I NEWS FROM NEVADA B Reg Shel~ck To many people who have aPpreciation to show, the words ·Thank you· seem very inadequat • So what do you say? We had some of the nation's best sportsm n at the Stardust Raceway last weekend. Twin engin Triumphs like Murray & Cook's turning 155 mph in the y, and Norton rider Buddy Parriott sweeping aside BSA ace Ralph White and Triumph star Eddie Mulder to win the open Grand Prix. Stormy Morris taking a Honda through the traps at 90 miles an hour and Ron Grant storming a Yamaha 18 miles to a 100cc class win. They were two very exciting days for me and I'm sure for all the riders and spectators. Many notables in tbe wonderful world of motorcycle racing found their way to the Stardust track. Mr. Wm. Berry A.M.A. Ex ecu ti ve from Ohio, Jean Carter, Dist. 37 Pres., Mr. Pete Colman of Jobnson Motors, City Commissioner Ed. Fountain, Optimist Club Pres. Rex Gowdy, sbow people from the strip hotels, racers from 6 states, and all the locals who turned out to ride or help. How do you convey your thanks to all who made our two days so good? We goofed on a few things-I openly stated in past columns that our road racing experience was a little shy and we needed help, and help we got in abundance! From A.M.A., A.F.M. and, I know, a few A.C.A. guys. The track was good, the weather did get a little cool and breezy around 4 p.m. Around 4:30 p.m. I could have gladly bOrrowed W.C:S Arctic gear. The most talked about event was the side cars. Two of the local TV sportscasters will be long talking about the daring passengers that dangle in the breeze as these machines Oy through the turns. A very big thank you to the Silver City Scramblers M.C. who provided the master turn marshal, sweeper, clerk of the course and some flagmen. The Vegas Valley M.C. for the ass't. starter Don Slagle and others. The Silver Queens, Shirley Slade, Paula De Ross, Shirley Fuller, who manned (or ladled) the gates. The Trophies of Las Vegas crew that prepared the trophies and delivered the forgotten ones to the track. to Jim Manning and his L.A. AFM chapter. Mr. Teliafaro who gave a racing Ita! Jet cycle to the winner of the side car races, Herb Hill for ValvoJine racing oil awards and Mr. Clem Bernier Gen. Mgr. of the Hacienda Hotel We learned a lot and re ran tbe roadrace many times in our minds and have taken note of our mistakes and oversights. We go again April 16th A.F.M. sanctioned for MONEY. You'll find that things will rol1 a little smoother and th payoff comes a little Quicker. A "Thank you· doesn't really express our aPllreciation but until we can come UP with a better phrase- Thank you all! Visitor from Vegas After three hectic daze, this weary young man grabbed a big bird to san Diego for a couple of days to relax. Met Earl Roloff at Guy Urquhart's and learned of Sunday's scrambles at Mesa Speedway. I couldn't resist the lure and out I went. Mr. Ray Alcaraz, co-owner of the Mesa track clued me in on their activities. Sunday's host club was the Mesa M.C. and ove r 150 riders were in th e pits preparing for the day's events. The pits were guarded by a uniformed security guard who kept women and spectators out in accordance with a big posted si gn. The track owners have put uP a large and lovely trophy for the high points collector at this track. I was also informed that the track will ron Dundays when there is no A.M.A. sanctioned event wi thin 70 miles and it is a va1lable on a percentage basis to any organized scrambles club. Mike Goodwin P.R. man for this track and Debesa wanted me to l1lllke mention of and incident that irritated a few L.A. riders. It seems that the track had set a closing time on the sign ups, tot failed to advertise the fact. A tonch of L.A. riders showed UP and were denied the chance to ride. Mike sayS this will not happen in the future and tbey ask that the riders return and welcome all out of towners. This is a 7/8 mile track... hard surfaced and with good jump. Spectators are prevented from getting too close to the track by a fence and gatemen. Each race is posted at the start line so that spectators know what class is running. The club presented the trophies after the race. I noticed one rider with a rigid frame flattracker in the 250 event and was amazed at the Powder Puff class. I think there were around 10 girl entries. with Hodakas very prominent. . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . .. .. . . ...... . . .. . .. . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .... .. . . ... . . .. . .
