Hare Scrambles At Adelanto Photos by Dick Wright and Bob Quick By Dick Wright Malcolm Smith, #21, blasted his way to 1st place over 382 entries in the big bike class, last Snnday. Malcolm was riding his 250cc Husqvama which makes the win even more spectacular. The Prospectors set up a 30-mile course and the big bikes were to go 2 laps. The banner was dropped at 10 a.m. It was rough {!ping to the smoke bomb. First one there was Malcolm Smith, with Dub (101) Smith, (any relation?) right behind him, and Lynn Cole, 4X was 3rd, with Howard Beach, #33 mnning 4th. The course stayed rougb to tbe 1st cbeck, dusty witb lots of dips and washouts running down from tbe hills. After tbe 1st check. the course got much faster.1t dropped into a long, wide. fast sand wash, smooth with no rocks. It was 4th gear all tbe way with lots of passing going on. There was a fire road after the sand wash, then the course headed UP into the foothills and onto narrow, rocky ridges where it is very hard to pass. Also there were a few rocky hills tbrown in for good measure. Coming into the pits after the 1st loop. Malcolm was still in the lead with Dub Smith 2nd. Dave Ekins, #67x, on a Rickman Ducati had moved into 3rd, Howard Beach still beld onto the 4th spot. And It's Malcolm, All the Way! Near the finish line at the end of the course, you could see the riders coming down tbe rolling billside heading for the finisb check. Malcolm Smith. the winner, bad a good 3-minute lead over Dub Smith, tbe 2nd man, but Dub was being pushed very hard I:lY the 3rd man, Amateur Howard Beach, on a Triumph TR6, wbo is only age 17 and has been riding for about a year and a balf and has been taking 1st Am. quite frequently lately. He comes down from Ridgecrest and is in the Sandblasters M.C.. the same club that J.D. Williams made famous. Dave Ekins pulled in 4th on his Ducati with Gary Conrad, #5x on a Greeves rigbt behind him. Lynn Cole on a Bultaco rounded out the first six places. Jack Byers. #3 on a Triumph was the 1st open expert and 7tb overall. with J.N. Roberts, #13 on a 360 Husqvarna taking 1st 500 ex. and 9tb overall. 1be riders to the pits all agreed that \be Prospectors ga ve them a good day's ride. Jack Morgan, #1x on a Hodaka. led all the way to take 1st place, and Frank Morgan, #3. also on a Hodaka, pulled in just three minutes later to take 2nd. Tbe Prospectors ran a separate course for tbe trail bikes; it was 7 miles long and we were to go five loops. The hanner dropped at 10:05, and we headed for the smoke bomb set between two hills about a mile out. It was rougb and humpy, wi th trails in deep powdery sand for the first 3 miles. and then went into a fire road at the first check wbich \.., lasted oniy 50 yards. Tbe course then headed back into the footbills, and again tbose sandy, bumpy boondocks until we came to a short gully with large rocks. From that point on, the rocky hills got pretty bairy! The first couple of hills were makeable for an experienced rider, but then we came upon a steep one witb large rocks which took its toll of trailbikes. The down-bill section had about 8 rocky ·steps· of about a foot drop on eacb (good stuff for a trials event) that you bad to bounce your bike down. Heading back into tbe pits we bad one more sbort fire road about 200 yards long and anotber up"bill grade. and tben downhill trails to tbe pits. Jack Morgan led it almost all tbe way to take tbe win. and Frank Morgan held the 2nd sPot for the entire race also. Robert Paxton. #13, moved UP into the limeligbt by taking 3rd. Tbe 1st Amateur was Lawrence Thomas. #30 wbo also took 4th overall. Lots or New Riders There were 140 trail bike entries, whicb shows that tbis class is growing. The last report I got from Kenny Peterson. wbo takes care of tbe points for this class. was that there were 390 signed up for the trail bikes. ranging from 9 to 59 years old. It is interesting to note that there are only 30 Experts. as most of this class is made up of brand new riders. When laying out a course, lite clubs sbouId try to keep this to mind lIDd try to give the DO"CeS a cbaDce to learn, althoucb I know it's bard to find good terri toIY In tile desert. The ProsPectors put a lot of work into their run and I'm sure that all tbe trail bikes riders felt that tbey got their money's wortb. as it took about two hours to complete the 5 loops on the course.
