By Wes Cooley ...; .... ;:;. ~ :a .., (I) ~ fo:I 2: fo:I ...::J ~ U Well, it looks as if 1967 is going to start off with qulte a bang. We have got political problems before we even start, with the road race to be held in Las Vegas on February 19th. The story goes that first the event was an AFM professional event, with a guaranteed pUrse of $1500 purse and all the non-AMA riders could ride the event. Now, we understand the AMA has put the pressure on and it will be an AMA event and we also understand it is going to be a sportsman event, rather than professional. But, to top it off, the AFM is going to do all the work and the AMA will get all the. credit, if there is any credit given. Now, if anything could be any more fouled UP than this, show me. IRVINE CANCELLED Naturally, this will give all of our critics an excellent opportunity to criticize or have sport with the ACA, but our Irvine event scheduled for January 15th has been cancelled. Contrary to anything you might hear, the cancellation was caused because the U.S. Government has condemmed the Sycamore Park, Irvine area where we were racing in order to make it into a national park. We have known for· some time now that the government was looking at this area, and we used the property with Irvine's permission with the stipulation that when condemnation proceedings started, we would relinquish our "per event" lease on this particular ground. Irvine is trying to find us some other land which is easily accessible from main roads, but this has not materialized as yet. CASTAIC ON so, we have rescheduled our first Motocross Silver Cup event to January 22nd to be held at our second location which will be Castaic Park. Castaic Park track is located off Highway 99 going north to Bakersfield. After you pass the Saugus cut-off and Tips Restaurant, you will pass the Los Angeles County Honor farm on the right hand side. The very next turn to yoU! left, which will be west, is Hasley's Canyon Road. Go five miles UP Hasley's Canyon Road and on the right side is the track entrance. Bear to the right all the way as the road forks at the golf course. The MODEL AVAl LABLE - Meet lovely Susan Hofmayer, professional gu1 model, who is currently being seen in some of the bet~r motorcycle advertisements in national magazines, Susan is using Tony Soto's $5,000 Harley-Davidson as a prop in this photograph taken by top shutter-snapper Dave Gooley. Yes, she really can ride a motorcycle. same program will be held as previously announced for the Silver Cup series. There will be 6 or 8 events located at two or three different tracks throughout the So. California area. All classes will be run and trophies will be given to all classes except the ACA will have a 250 and 500cc professional class which will be open to ACA or FIM riders. The Moto Cross championship will be determined by accumulation of points using the international points system. 40% of the gate will go into a point fund and the riders will be paid so much according to how many points they accumulate. In other words, if there is $1000 in the point fund at the end of the 6 to 8 events and there is 100 points total accumulated, each point will be worth $10. So, if a man has 10 points, he will have $100 coming. In nO way does this professional class interfere with the regular sportsman events to be held in all classes with six or mare machines, from 50cc through the Open class. We hope these new professional 250 and 500cc classes will stimulate the inte~ est of the more serious Moto cross riders. LetR start '67 by going back to '66 and highlighting the So. Nevada Scrambles Championship held byVegas Valley M.C. on Dec. 11th. Race Chairman Jay Willey bad the track in good shape considering he had to do it without a grader. A good crowd of spectators turned out to watch the locals, Cal and Arizona riders put on plenty of thrilling moments. The 50cc event was won by 10year-old Mike North wi th ll-year-old John Slagle taking second from the older boys. The 100cc #l plate from Arizona, Damon Gordon had to settle for the 5th place finish as Honda ace Danny Sromalla continues his winning ways. Second place to Dan Lallz followed by Bridgestone mounted Jay Willey, who has given Danny a good run for half the season. 250 Novice winner again was Chuck Hatcher (Bultaco). Monty Montoya 2nd, Dan Anika 3rd. Local Montesa dealer Tom Johnson, who recently opened his shop in the Rancho Plaza, rode to a 5th place finish. Fred Morganstern (Bultaco) took the 250 Amateur h 0 nor s. Shane Ross (Greeves) and Bob Walling (Bultaco) followed him in. The 250 Expert class was marred by a spill in the first heat that sent Don Slagle to the hospital after a rear end collision with Eo b Tooley. Don bounced on his helmet but came out okay proving the value of good headgear. The win went to Bob Tooley, Yamaha-Bultaco rider for Art's Motorcycle Shop. Dan Harnett 2nd, Bill Hill (Greeves) 3rd and "Taco Terror" Terry Grieble 4th. Open class saw Tip Sisco ride his 350 Honda to a third place finish for about the 4th time this year as the class was won by Dan Harnett, 2nd place to BSA Victor rider Ron Sattler. Lonnie Arnold motored UP from L.A. and treated the crowd to his usual spectacular spills and wound UP 4th. The Robin Spilsbury Awards Dinner and Dance will be held this year at the Las Vegas Golt" Club. Washington and Decateur en Jan. 21, 8 p.m. A new trophy donated by the Herb Hill Oil Co. will be awarded to a competition rider to be voted for by all competition card holders of the S.N.M.R.A. for racing sportsmanship. Local citizens awards will be presented to those who assisted and promoted the sport in '66. Music will be provided by "The Sioux Uprisings" , a frontier clad, shaggy-haired group of music makers! This could be worth the admission price alone, which is $10.00 per couple and open to all interested parties. Last minute note: The Vegas Valley M.C. have started work on their new short track for '67. An oiled sand 1110th mile track on Craig road, should be opened to 250's and under around April 1st.
