Race to the Top of Pikes Peak THE FANTASTIC TELESCO FORKS Peport and Photos by Brad Dewey Ninety motorcycles roared away up Pikes Peak as Doyne Bruner of the Pikes Peak Comets dropped the nag starting the race at Glen Cove. Twenty one minutes and about eight miles later Gary Meyers aboard a Bultaco 175 crossed the finish line at the top of the 14.110 foot mountain. Meyers took the overall winner trophy away from 74 riders finishing the race. Second to cross the finish line was Bob Webster who took first place in the Open A class. The road was clear in places, snowpacked in othel'S iuJd there were stretches covered with drafts up to two feet in depth. Three riders slipped off the mountain but only one needed winch assistance to regain the road. All in all it was a good, fast race run in 0 to 5 degrees above temperatures which is relatively mild for this event. The sponsoring Pikes Peak Comets of Colorado Springs were assisted by the Colorado Mounted Rangers. The Rangers provided 3 vehicles and ambulanc e service which was not needed.
