These boys didn ' t lay tha t run out in no Saturday aft ernoon lark. It was thought abou t and probably changed a few time s before th e li me was thrown and the firs t ribbon was tied. We started at 10:OQ a .rn. , promotly heading east a bout a mile north of the Sha dow Mt. road. The s moke bomb was about 4 miles out and going s traight up as there was n't a breath of wind. T errain to the bomb was fast and I lucked out and hit the bomb in th e fir st 20 or s o (according to my wife who was standing the re watching it). We picke d up the trail a little to the left. Dust was very thick . Th ere had bee n a little rain in the des ert the prec eding Monday, but the top of the ground had dri ed out and the dus t was as thick as eve r. Soon after the bomb we starte d into the hills. Roller coaste r ty pe of te rrain with lots of little rocks, which I had the luck to pick one of these little goodies up off the front ti re and it went to my rear s procket and proceeded to try and force its way into the sp rocket teeth along with my chain (how stupid, it just don't fit) and as a net result it mutilated the chain in 3 places and of course on the side of an uphill , where el se? Well I carry a little tin box of chain repai r parts and a chain breaker and a bunch of master links so a II I had to do was pick up the pa rts of chai n, start breaking the chain here and there to get rid of the bad sections and put it back together with a link. a link and one half. a half li nk a nd four master li nks. About 15 minute s later, after all the he rd had gone by and the re were a few stragglers coming along every now and then. I fina lly got under way. At this point the re was no dust and I had the trail practically to myself so I started trying to make up time which really is useless because if you cou ld never get back where you were , so j us t sit back and ride and enjoy it. Got one hec k of a lot of experience in passing on this run , usually it 's the othe r way around - everybody pas s es me ! The fi rst loop wound through these rugged foothills north of the Shadow Mt. rd. and soo n we came out of the hills heading north along a vast valley and it was fas t , going up into the hills again. I got i nto a real choppy san d wash. or roc ky c anyo n if you will, saw Bobby F erro s etti ng there , and hollered hello to him. After we got into these hills a ways we s ta rte d heading in a westerly direction whic h swung out into a bi g loop and fi nally s outh. W c ame ove r a rocky hill and th rough a s addl e and you could loo k down onto e the pits. Went down the little rock hill and stopped at my cl ub's pit truck. took on gas , a dri nk of water and started out on th e second loop . Hea ding so uth still, we c rossed the Shadow Mt. roa d and did a left tum and picked up the Dyna Mites' old trai l from 2 weeks previous and headed east again toward the Sha dow Mountai ns . We followed the Dyna Mites' trai l across the foothills until we started up their sandwash and he re we left it for a trail more to the east which took us down toward 395 and we finally got on the old P rosp ectors' hare scrambles trail and went up the box canyon. I passed Bud E kins in the sandwash here. He had his Metisse Iyi ng 'on its si de scrutinizing something t hat was amiss.. At the end of the box canyon there was a check a nd we went up this rocky hill to the top and down thro ugh the boulder on the other s ide into a sandwash and I thought we were going to the dry lake. Nope , they bent us out of that one back into the hills again and i nto some new cou ntry , up these real roc ky hills and across the top and down another boulder-in fested downhill and then we he aded for EI Mirage. Onto the freeway again and across the lake (we went out of t he la ke in the same place the Dyna Mites did) . Jus t a slight va riation from here to the pits. A few new washes and some real fast cou ntry a nd they brought us into the pits from the west over a hill. The first loop was ribbone d in red which doe s n' t show up very well for some reas on, but that second loop was wild with yellow ribbon whic h you can see for mile s.
