Yet every day across th e nation, hund re d s of new motorcycle rid ers ar e ins t ructe d in t he ra re art o f cy cle riding by semi-qualified retail store personnel. Is i t any wonder that a l ot of th em fail to get home i n one p iec e ? T each i n g beginner s ho w to ride is no more than business of t he overworke d moto rcycle dealer than issuing dri v ers licenses. bu t the s ho c k ing fact is , nobody else is qualified. orset up to do the job! Nobody . that is, except Joe Hath and Bob Tat um. These two ge ntlemen happen to be Lieutenants on th e Col umb us. Ohio police force , and althoug h ne ither has ever ridden motorcycles i n the line of duty, both are avid a fter-hours cycle dubs. Last August 18 they incorporated some i d eas t hey shared to fonn Obi o Moto rcycle Drive r Trai ni"~ Inc., a school to teach " eool e bo" ID ride the right way. For Fun & P rofit Hirin g off-d uty motorcycle po lice i ns t ructo rs at $4 an hou r. they put together a Io-hour course that sells for $45 . The object is to take a completely inexperienced motorcycl e rider and put him (or her) throu gh an Intensive two hours in the class room , followed by six hou rs of simulated road instruction , and then check his p roficiency in two hours of riding with real traffic . with the instruc tor following alo ng on another bi k e .
