Our advice to Wilkinson was to ha ve plans drawn up of th e prototy pe engine and offer them to engi nee ring ent hus i a s ts who wi sh to bui ld th e ir own ve rs io ns . Now eve ryone who wan t s to pioneer i n mot or cycle dev elopm ent can e xpe rience th e t hri ll of buildi ng his own engi ne , from sc ratch , on a hobby-builde r' s bud ge t. Wilkinson 's plan s can be follo wed by an y co rnpe te nt mach in ist, and no heat t reating or c a s tings a re employed. If a NEWTOY from page 3 eng ine came to W ilkin s on four ye ars ago after he los t a big orde r for a 250cc racing engine he des i gned around a Z undapp c ra nkshaft. · Z undapp cranks were s elling for abo ut Twin Igniti on points are fixed directly to the rocking beam axil, a natural location. At Idling rpm low-tuned (4:1 c.r.) engine d. velops so much torque one can stand on the flywheel (left) until shoe smokes without slowing It down (we tried It). That wasn' t enough , so onto th e sh elf wen t the plans and the prot otyp e for that powerplant , a lo ng with nearly a doz en ot he r engine of Wilkinson desi gn, s cratched by the cost factor . Of course it fir ed on the first spin (Wil kins on possesses mechanical equi va lent of a " green thumb ") and when we heard about it we i:i . COOLIES COLUMN You who attended last week end 's Hop etown event , I' m s ure , were thrilled by the riding of the local talent as well as that of the international riders , especially Torsten Hallman , th ree times world 's Moto C ros s c hampion in the 250cc class. You mig ht be surprised to know t bat Torsten 's lap time of 2 min. 52 sec. was the fastest ever re co rde d on the course for a 250cc machine , or, for that matt er, for any machine of any size. On Sunday he was able to make an offici al lap ti me on hi s 360 Husqvarna of 2 min . 51 sec. SOme of our ArnerIcan ri de rs a re as good or could be as good , but you ca n see why the man was able to capture the worl d 's campion title three t imes . In talking with Hal lman , some of the riders were amazed at the rigid program he goes through for his season. Calistheni cs every day, runnin g to keep his le gs in sha pe, and riding for two or three hours every day. He stated he made in the neighbo rhood of 50,000 marks last year which is equal to approximately $12.000, and in his country this is quite a good li ving. W ith his two wins at Hopetown, he is going hack home $800 richer which isn 't too bad in anyone's country! Checki ng over the' records , we find the purse paid out for the International M oto cross at Hopetown this weekend was the la rges t purse ever offered in an e vent of this type in the country . When asked what he thought of the course Hallma n s aid he felt the course was every similar to those he had competed on in Europe except for several of the long smooth straightaways . However , all in all, he was very much impressed by the course and how smoothly the events were run. I think everyone Racer Hallman, left, and column ist Cooll Y. will admit he is a professional and an an inte rnational event for the 250cc and outstanding rider. the 500cc clas se s , and Mr. Hall man has One of our local guys with some as sured us that when he returns in 1967. European experience this yea r In the he will bring six or s even outs tanding lj.day Trials , Malcolm Smith, gave Mr. riders from Europe with him to compete alHaliman a scare several times. M in this event. colm was abl e to tak e the lead several times, not only In the 250cc eve nt but also In the 500cc event. I' m sure many of the riders bene fited by riding with Hal lman and observing the way he handles his machine in the rough. The 500cc International event was run in three mota crosses. consistin g of 7 laps eac h over the approxtma te 03 mile course. Most were amazed to s ee how well Hallman was abl e to ride in the pouring-down rain and two or three Inch es of heavy mud, The jo ke on Sunday was that he brought his Swedish weather with him so he could eliminate some of the competiti on, and this he did! In the final mota cros s , out of the 23 s tarters , only 8 finish ed the event , and Mr. Hall man's lap times only dropped twos econds in what one might say were terribl e conditions . Fa ns and riders got their flrst real taste of int ernational mota cros s racing in this country, and now that they've had a taste of it, they would like to s ee more. W e're very happy the DirtDiggers M otorcycl e Clu b saw fit to put On this event and expose the Southern Cal ifornia fans and riders to this type of competAVA ILABLE N O W : ition. W e als o happy to announce that e'r BT&E CLUTCH PLATE KIT the 1967 Hopetown event scheduled for for Yamaha 1965 and November 11th and 12th, will also be THE m otorcycle !>[lV ICf • .... ee "" Q" SEND SOt FOR CHRISTMAS CATALOGS & RUSH ORDER BLANK se ee · · · .. • · I .. • . • · • • .. · · .• • ..
